CNN is reporting that a UAL ATL-SFO flight is being diverted to Dallas after finding an unclaimed (unattached?) backpack prior to takeoff from Atlanta, as well as a Blackberry that does not belong to anyone on board.
The flight is presently over southern Oklahoma, and is being diverted to Dallas.
Could be nothing, but given the day today, better to err on the side of caution...

Someone is frantically looking for their back pack and blackberry, cursing the theif that took it.
But better safe than sorry.
If this was a bomb we wouldnt be hearing about a plane being diverted, rather we would hear of a plane crashing imo.

Man, this reminds me of the weeks following 9/11/01, when these kinds of things were happening every hour.
I was thinking about your question last night.
It seems like they wouldnt risk the heightened awareness
that we naturally have on this date.
Their resources would be better spent on a day we do not expect imo, and that would outweigh any PR of a repeat on the same same.
But they are crazy so who knows.
We have morons and terror probes using our transportation systems. Sorry if that offends you but you are blaming the WRONG people.
I thought the all clear was given at Penn Station.

I don't get it. How could something be "unclaimed" prior to flight? Don't you claim your baggage after the flight is over? How could they know baggage is unclaimed ahead of time?
Remember all the rumors on 9/11? Given the events of that morning who could doubt any of them?
The wacky ones would, but the evil ones will play out something on any day other than 9/11 hoping for lax security.
That's what I think as well.
