The move, designed to help shore up Medicare's shaky finances, has enraged many because it was adopted without public debate. A Republican-led conference committee added the measure to the Medicare bill even though neither the House of Representatives nor the Senate version contained it.

Huh? How does that work?

Get ready for every thrifty American who saved and invested properly for retirement; this will apply to social security benefits eventually as well. Watch as the government screws you out of all your S.S. benefits along with your Medicare benefits to assist those who didn't bother to invest/save properly. Suckers all. Although we didn't have a choice about paying these so called benefit taxes. I never counted on receiving them anyway as part of my retirement planning. The greatest Ponzi scheme ever developed by an elected government. Makes me wanna cry, at least for those who were responsible for their financial condition anyway. Another tax you'll never see the benefit from.

It only makes sense to apply a means test to this entitlement. Why should a millionaire in Palm Beach pay the same premium as a poor person? The fact is that unless some such criteria are applied to entitlements (including social security) the plans will go bust and no one will collect anything!

Yet more proof that in 15 or 20 years,Social Security and Medicare will be fully "means tested" which means that they'll just become fancy forms of welfare.

Anyone born in 1950,or later, who thinks their retirements will be *nearly* as comfortable or secure as that of their parents is stark raving mad....crazy!

What about equal protection under the law? The costs should be equal for everybody.

Interesting that a cabal of cretinous traitor Republicans did this in 2003 and managed to keep it secret until now.

Thanks, guys.

Seniors taking in more than $200,000 and couples making more than $400,000 will see their so-called Part B premiums rise the most.

Apparently too poor to pay for their own insurance. I love socialism.

Harry Truman was so proud the day President Johnson invited him to the Whitehouse for the signing of the Medicare Act! It was something the former County Commissioner tried so hard but failed to get passed by CONgress during his administration.

The entire medical profession warned the CONgress and LBJ that the law, with it's blank check approach to Socialized Medicine would trigger greed and inflation in medical costs for generations and eventually become a monster that could consume the resources of the entire federal government.

But what the hell... Who listens when there are votes to be bought and legacies to be built and busts and buildings named after chicken poop politicians to be built to contain rows of them?

it's bush's fault. call George Will and tell him that we need to fix that prescription drug plan. Maybe dropping all the changes that will pay for improving health care system like medical savings accounts and indexing medicare payments. Oh the horror of the Republican congress and their evil spending.

Medicare will thus price more affluent senior citizens out of the program, because free enterprise will offer a better program for less money. So Medicare will be stuck with only the poorest and sickest, which will only hasten the demise of the program. Good riddance to another failed nanny state program that should never have seen the light of day. Our medical bills would never have become this inflated without the government's meddling in medicine.

Actually this is just an extension of the inequity of the Medicare tax. Someone making 20K annualy pays $290 for Medicare. Someone making $5 Million pays $72,500 per year into the Medicare fund. Now when the millionaire retires, he probably will not be eligible for Medicare, or will have to pay ridiculous premiums with high deductibles.

I think that a less controversial way of looking at this is: The cost of Medicare will be subsidized by the government for people with low incomes. If you look at it that way, there's no issue. If you reverse the context then it sounds more like a "tax the rich" scheme.

I'm not a big fan of government subsidies but if you believe that Medicare should exist at all, then this change is probably a good thing. If you feel that this change is going to unfairly penalize the rich, then why not abolish Medicare completely?

Welfare strikes again. The moral of the story is that if you save to take care of yourself, you will be financially punished. Deadbeats will be rewarded as usual.

Congress also banned from Long-Term Medicare those owning a residence worth over $500,000. If you are someone who scrimped and saved, and gave up "fun" spending so that you could put everything into your home - you've made a mistake.

And, what's scary, it has only just begun. If the Dems take over, it will be "monetary terrorism" against every saver.
