To Hold Senate, G.O.P. Bolsters Its Most Liberal
By ADAM NAGOURNEY

WARWICK, R.I., Sept. 9 -- With a barrage of television advertisements and the mobilization of its get-out-the-vote machine, the national Republican Party has lined up to beat back a conservative primary challenge to the most liberal Republican in the Senate, Lincoln Chafee of Rhode Island. The outcome on Tuesday could help determine whether Democrats have a shot at taking back the Senate.
In an extraordinary pre-emptive announcement, the National Republican Senatorial Committee has said it will concede Rhode Island to the Democrats should Stephen Laffey, the mayor of Cranston, defeat Mr. Chafee in the primary.

The Chaffee voters must have held their noses when they elected him. Only reason they did, IMO, is it helps in giving control of the Senate to the Republicans.
With Laffee they'll have that and 'conservative' to boot. I like what Rush says, conservatism wins every time, and Republicans should run unabashedly as conservatives.
Give the voters a choice in throwing the rascal out.
Idiot remark.
If you mean it is insane to support Laffey who can not win the general, then I agree.
The stupidest move I can imagine is voting for laffey who can not win the general election.
It is time for you and the rest of the malcontents to get out of the republican party and go off and start your own.
You can nominate Pat buchanan again.
You are right, the GOP is supporting GOP INCUMBENTS ALL ACROSS THE NATION INCLUDING CHAFFEE.
They are thinking about winning and denying the democrats a seat.
You and the rest of the stooges are thinking about handing the democrats victory so you can say see I told you so.
You and the rest of the moonbats need to go form your own party since the republicans are not pure enough for you.
You want to put some money on that ?
regarding your post 36, you don't own this site, you don't own the republican party.
If you don't like either one, you can take a hike. No one made you God.
Primaries are for people to decide and if they want the rino, so be it. You are not God either.
from your post 49 "Tell your party hack GOP bosses to stay out of the primaries."
from your post 56 "Schlesinger has no chance but surely the GOP could have recruited a better Republican to run."
Don't you get tired of contradicting yourself ?
You are wrong. Read this.

Chaffee is an INCUMBENT, Harris is not.
Santorum has 10 million cash on hand, his opponent Casey has 5 million.
I have seen nothing to indicate this.
There has been plenty to show that Gray Davis wanted conservative bill simon as the opponent instead of rino riordan and Davis supported simon and smashed riordan before the primary.
I have not seen what you describe.
Give me a break, Im not one of those "Bush didnt round up every single illegal and ship them to Gitmo so Im not voting folks". It would be nice to see the RNC back at least ONE conservative who wont vote with dems most of the time, join the Main Street Republicans or the Gang of 14..
Fact:the only important difference between Lieberman and Lament is the war.
Fact:Lieberman has made it clear that if he's elected he will call himself a democRAT.
And yet....Lieberman is treated like a skunk at a picnic by *every* top democRAT....Dean,Kennedy,Kerry,Clinton...even Dodd.
Just as Dean was the *true* choice of the movers and shakers of the Party in '04,Lament is their *true* choice today. To them, there's no room for Lieberman in a Party as "principled" and "brave" as theirs.
they are backing santorum and blackwell big time.
go here to see the efforts for blackwell and melman has said that holding santorum's seat was priority one.

No, the only not-so-stunning thing is the two-faced approach of the GOP uber alles folks, who on one hand tell conservatives to either win in the primary or support the moderate in the general election. And then, when a conservative is the front-runner for the GOP, the same folks stab them square in the shoulder blades.
It's shameless, and you and your brethern have a lot of nerve lecturing conservatives here. You just want to take our votes for granted but otherwise you see us as a political nuisance, getting in the way of pet GOP establishment projects such as amnesty, earmarks and entitlements.
