To Hold Senate, G.O.P. Bolsters Its Most Liberal

WARWICK, R.I., Sept. 9 -- With a barrage of television advertisements and the mobilization of its get-out-the-vote machine, the national Republican Party has lined up to beat back a conservative primary challenge to the most liberal Republican in the Senate, Lincoln Chafee of Rhode Island. The outcome on Tuesday could help determine whether Democrats have a shot at taking back the Senate.
In an extraordinary pre-emptive announcement, the National Republican Senatorial Committee has said it will concede Rhode Island to the Democrats should Stephen Laffey, the mayor of Cranston, defeat Mr. Chafee in the primary.

Kean Jr. said that Rummy should go. I don't think we need senators like that.
This has always been Karl Rove's modus operandi.
First, back the liberal in the primary. If the liberal wins, back him to the hilt. If the conservative wins, only back him if the conventional wisdom in Washington is that "he can win."
The problem is, in most cases, their predictions become self-fulfilling prophecies...since they're the ones with the resources.
Democrat please. Think I am going to waste time responding to a transparent Moveon.org stodge? Doubtlessly you think your sign on the very pinnacle of wit. Actually it merely shows how politically and historically ignorant you are.
That's a bunch of horse feces and you know it.
We're not asking Chafee to be a Tancredo. Hell I wouldn't mind it if he were liberal on social issues such as abortion and gay marriage, considering the state/region he represents.
But he's a TOTAL LIBERAL on everything. I mean, he voted against the Bush tax cuts and the WOT. Republicans are at least supposed to be strong on fiscal and national security issues, but Chafee is not. Don't you think that's a little too far?
Now, now...that's a thread for another day :-)
don't tell me Chaffee is some kind of "satan" - OK, he's not a conservative, but he's not the devil. we get a few votes out of him (he voted for Roberts), he votes to organize the senate with us.
electing Chaffee and Kean Jr, enables other good senators like Coburn and others on our side - to be in the majority. that's the way you have to look at it, you have to look at each race individually.
The Republican grassroots needs to rise up and give the RNC muckety mucks the Robespierre treatment.
Lest we forget the likes of Olympia Snowe or Susan Collins also.
All in all, it boils down to the mindset of the voters and if a politician concedes their values just to cater to the whim of the voters then the inmates are running the asylum.
Both parties are guilty of this however with the Dem's in most cases they agree with the inmates.
we can't replay the CT republican primary now - the race is set, we have to deal with reality.
is Santorum being starved for money by the RNC? if that case can be made, then of course you are correct.
What did the article say, 15% registered Republicans? That seems like provable data. And, in previous elections, Chaffee has already demonstrated that a Democrat wannabe can beat a Democrat.
Stuff lke this helps me understand the fury of the libs regarding Lieberman. It prooved that the big wigs on both sides are full of it.
All my campaign contributions go to the Club For Growth, so they can try to send clowns like Chaffee packing. I will never, ever send money to the RNC or congressional PACs again.
That's why I kind of hope Lamont wins in CT and shows that grassroots can beat the entrenched party hacks.
Frankly, I don't know. But I can't understand why the RNC would spend money in support of Chaffee in the primary if there are any Republican candidates anywhere else who might benefit from these funds in the general election.
Besides which, if $X improved Chaffee's shot at winning by 10 pts, that's not as valuable to the party as improving Santorum's odds by 2 pts. (Proportion may vary due to individual preference, but you get my point).
BFD, so did 76 other Senators.
Chafee has got to go.
Hate to break the news to ya,but it was democRAT Party hacks who have gotten Lament as far as he's gone up until now.
When it comes to "hacks",Lieberman is the outsider here. Lament has the full support of every single filthy leftist down at DNC Headquarters.
True. You and I have been down that road on other threads and the one thing that we both agree on is that one of us will be eating a huge meal of crow come November 8th.
