To Hold Senate, G.O.P. Bolsters Its Most Liberal
By ADAM NAGOURNEY

WARWICK, R.I., Sept. 9 -- With a barrage of television advertisements and the mobilization of its get-out-the-vote machine, the national Republican Party has lined up to beat back a conservative primary challenge to the most liberal Republican in the Senate, Lincoln Chafee of Rhode Island. The outcome on Tuesday could help determine whether Democrats have a shot at taking back the Senate.
In an extraordinary pre-emptive announcement, the National Republican Senatorial Committee has said it will concede Rhode Island to the Democrats should Stephen Laffey, the mayor of Cranston, defeat Mr. Chafee in the primary.

(enables Coburn to be in the majority)
Good observation.
The record will show I'm busting my butt, both here and elsewhere, trying to raise support and funds for Rightroots, backing conservative Republican candidates.
Perhaps you should show a modicum of intelliegence and class by doing a little research before blowing off your pie hole.
Whitehouse will not just stomp on Laffey. Laffey is a popular mayor from a large Democratic Rhode Island city, and is the perfect Republican candidate for the state. He is mainstream Catholic, Fiscal Conservative, and an all around Populist, as are most Rhodies. Once he debates Whitehouse, like he did with Chafee, those numbers will change. (But Im not saying Laffey will necesarily win)
Never, never, never, send $$ to the RNC; never, never, never.
Try to harmonize THIS ping. I thought you RINO backers demanded that once the primary was over it was time to support the nominee regardless? Guess that rules only applies to us conservative yokels huh.
Hey, Wisconsinstan isn't exactly Texas either pal.
Most New England Republicans have at least some fiscal and national security conservatism in them. That's fine if they're liberal on the social issues. But Chafee is an out and out liberal. I don't care about voting for Chafee to hold some stupid committees or have that magical majority in numbers only. The guy's a loser, period.
The GOP wants to hold a majority in the Senate. Laffey has no chance of being elected.
True, True, True.............Its politics, and you get to 50 any way you can.
I understand that Wisconsin has its share or wackos but the simple fact of the matter is that New England, with the possible exception of NH (and NH is well on its way to turning blue, too),New England is very, very much unlike and other part of the country when it comes to politics.
New Englend Republicans,*real* Republicans know better than any other Republicans that the best we cam ever hope for is the lesser of two (or more) evils.
Is Chaffee a clown? Yes.But he's the closest thing to a real Republican that has a *ghost* of a chance in Nov...AND...he's light years better than *any* democRAT that the RI democRAT Party might nominate.
In short, the price of demanding philosophical purity in the Republican nominee would be victory for a RI democRAT who would make Chaffee look like Reagan in comparison.
I give you my solemn oath that it's just that simple.
Sorry for all the typos.
Fer' them what don't know no better, Palestine is pronounced "Pallah-steen" in Texas!
Rove doesn't back GOP "liberals" that he does not think are in the hunt. I don't know where you got that from. Political party pros don't do intra-party ideology much. They leave that to some Freepers, at least on the right side of the ledger. :)
Yes, the beloved..LOL Senator Dole has declared after spending millions of donations by folks largely more conservative in their views to save a Senator more Liberal than Clinton and Feingold, that she will conceed R.I. because Laffey says he supports tax cuts and Iraq.
Do we see why NO MONEY EVER should go to the RNC any longer? Rightroots. Club for Growth. Individual donations to candidates. Avoid the RNC like the plague.
Not that I'm offended they don't support Laffey. I'd like the money to go to Steele, santorum, etc.
I AM offended they felt the best use of their donors money was to save Chafee's hide. It's despicable how low they've sunk to try to push Liberalism forwar in the GOP. Her time would have been better spent ridding the Senate of Byrd, yet this is how she's occupied her time.
Oh, and Senator Dole is mailing out flyers they have to vote Chafee if they want tax cuts, good judges and Republican organizing vote. Chafee opposed taxes, won't break the judicial filibuster, voted against Alito when his state has a high Italian population (which is simply stupid politics) and has said he'd consider switching in a 50/50 Senate!
I want Senator's Dole's resignation immediately.
And, vote laffey!
No, the only stunning development is that anyone believes they can trust Chafee to vote to organize the ASenate for the GOP in a split.
Hopefully enough voters in R.I. aren't so naive.
That almost makes me feel like staying home Election Day.
OTOH, maybe it's a ploy by Karl Rove. Laffey wins and the people in R.I. feel they can trust him because he was abandoned by the GOP. LOL
You answered your own question.
Harris is a conservative. Chaffee is a liberal Democrat. The Establishment in the GOP wants to advance liberalism and they are using donors money irresponsibly and misleadingly to do so.
The Mainstreet McCain/Rockefellar wings hates conservatives, and is trying to destroy us from within. That's why not one red cent should go to the RNC coffers anymore. Send it all individually or to conservatives PACS.
Lincoln Chafee needs to go take a dump. Why would the GOP support this living and breathing asshole? I'm further to the right than Rush Limbaugh himself and frustrated beyond belief. We don't need people like Lincoln Chafee. Ken Mehlman, you need to answer for this before I write another check to the RNC.
IMHO, the RNC would rather lose RI to a Democrat than have Laffey win.
