On Friday evening, Bill Clinton's lawyers sent a new letter to ABC chief Bob Iger demanding that ABC yank "The Path to 9/11." We've obtained a copy of the letter, and it reads in part: "As a nation, we need to be focused on preventing another attack, not fictionalizing the last one for television ratings. `The Path to 9/11' not only tarnishes the work of the 9/11 Commission, but also cheapens the fith anniversary of what was a very painful moment in history for all Americans. We expect that you will make the responsible decision to not air this film." Full text of the letter after the jump.
Dear Bob,
Despite press reports that ABC/Disney has made changes in the content and marketing of "The Path to 9/11," we remailn concerned about the false impression that airing the show will leave on the public. Labelng the show as "fiction" does not meet your responsibility to the victims of the September 11th attacks, their families, the hard work of the 9/11 Commission, or to the American people as a whole.
At a moment when we should be debating how to make the nation safer by implementing the recommendations of the 9/11 Commission, "The Path to 9/11" calls into question the accuracy of the Commission's report and whether fabricated scenes are, in fact, an accurate portrayal of history. Indeed, the millions spent on the production of this fictional drama would have been better spent informing the public about the Commission's actual findings and the many recommendations that have yet to be acted upon. Unlike this film, that would have been a tremendous service to the public.
Although our request for an advance copy of the film has been repeatedly denied, it is all too clear that our objections to "The Path to 9/11" are valid and corroborated by those familiar with the film and intimately involved in its production.
-- Your corporate partner, Scholastic, has disassociated itself from this proect.
-- 9/11 Commission Chairman Thomas Kean, who served as co-executive producer on "The Path to 9/11," has stated that he raised concerns about the accuracy of several scenes in the film and that his concerns were not addressed during production.
-- Harvey Keitel, who plays the star role of FBI agent John O'Neill, told reporters yesterday that while the screenplay was presented to him as a fair treatment of historical events, he is upset that several scenes were simply invented for dramatic purposes.
-- Numerous Members of Congress, several 9/11 Commissioners and prominent historians have spoken out against this movie.
-- Indeed, according to press reports, the fact that you are still editing the film two days before it is scheduled to air is an admission that it is irreparably flawed.
As a nation, we need to be focused on preventing another attack, not fictionalizing the last one for television ratings. "The Path to 9/11" not only tarnishes the work of the 9/11 Commission, but also cheapens the fith anniversary of what was a very painful moment in history for all Americans. We expect that you will make the responsible decision to not air this film.
Sincerely,
Bruce R. Lindsey Chief Executive Officer William J. Clinton Foundation
Douglas J. Band Counselor to President Clinton Office of William Jefferson Clinton
Intimidation, distorion, censorship. These are the tools of the Democrats.
The Clinton have moved beyond Thugism to Stalinism ...
I thought I heard Kean on television say that the movie was faithful to the 9/11 Commission Report and any changes he suggested were made?
Clinton is sounding more and more like a Mobster every day.
Upon its release the 9/11 Commission Report was immediately anointed by the Dems and MSM as the final word on all things related to 9/11.
The current work under discussion threatens that report's standing as the Holy Grail of investigations. By taking the basic report, adding other outside work then supplementing with interviews, adding dialog, and coming to different conclusions than the report did, the writers of "The Path to 9/11" have threatened the legitimacy of the 9/11 Commission's work.
The Dems in leadership and on the commission cannot afford a critical analysis of their report. Over time thinking people will begin to wonder just who the Commissioners talked to in their information gathering and what information was suppressed.
I had a history professor in college who always encouraged his students to step back from the picture and see the bigger picture. When I step back away from the obvious I see the light of truth being shed on one of the biggest frauds ever perpetrated on the American public, that being the 9/11 Commission's report.
Where does this stand? Is ABC caving or not?
Ah time to trot out the nastiest attack dog from the Clinton poodle squad. Bruce is the guy who holds all the secrets on who's pets get killed if they dare to say they got banged by the bent one.
Freedom of speech for me, not for thee.
The real problem with this movie is that no matter how you slice it, even a passing reference to the events leading up to 9-11 shows the US did not do anything to stop the escalating number of terrorists acts starting with the 1993 bombing of the WTC.
And no matter how you spin it, that will be obvious to any viewer.
And the Clintons just can't stand that happening.
And Cliton didn't get a BJ in the White House while the whole friggin world was being set up for constant attack by radical IzlamothugMuzzies. He is an a-wipe to beat all a-wipes.
Boy, Slick Willy is really scared that the american public will finally learn about the 12 times he refused action to get OBL. Between this letter, and the threatening letter that senate democrats sent to ABC, I'm looking more and more forward to seeing this movie. Truly amazing stuff going on here, and ABC hasn't even reported the threatening letter they received; not on their web site, not on the air. Amazing.
I don't think the 9-11 Commission report was the last word on the movie. They used a number of sources and as come to be known, the Commission is most certainly not the last word on the matter.
It turned out to be more of a political protection racket for Clinton.
And, of course, I would have welcomed this kind of outrage about Farenheit 911 or Spike Lee's recent Katrina "documentary," and, and, and . . .
If the GOP doesn't make hay out of this - and they probably won't - they're crazy.
I think the dems are blowing their cover by throwing a tantrum on this and a lot of prople are recognizing it. They should heve kept their mouths shut.
That's for sure.
Bruce mentions that Kean said that problems with the movie that he addressed weren't fixed and I heard Kean on television and didn't think he said that at all. But I was only half paying attention.
Maybe another freeper will remember.
I predict ABS will pull it, not because of this letter from Klintoon hacks, but for the reason of the Demonkat thugs in the Senate threatening the broadcast licennses of their affiliates.
They have a fiduciary responsibility to their shareholders -- they can sell it to another party for distribution on cable and satellite and DVD. The FCC and therefore the Senate cannot touch it there ...
They have partially caved. But there is no way they can cave in at this late stage.
Let the truth begin to be told.
Hypocrite scumbag Dims are the nadir of human debris.
I heard it's going to slam the President on the second night and I don't see anyone complaining about that.
McCarthyism? More like Communism! McCarthy was never about changing history--but Stalin and Lenin were VERY much like what the 'Rats are doing now.
Exactly. That's what I heard too.
