Now "Professional Historians" Pressure ABC to Drop "The Path to 9/11"
Yahoo News ^ | September 8, 2006 | Rick Perlstein

Posted on 09/08/2006 10:10:21 PM PDT by TaxachusettsMan

A group of leading American historians today sent the following letter to Mr. Robert Iger of ABC. Stressing the significance of the "traumatic" events of 9/11, the signers of this letter are calling on Mr. Iger to stand up for responsible media treatments of such important historical moments and withdraw the program from circulation. The growing list of signatories will be updated at openlettertoabc.blogspot.com.

The text of the letter follows.

Dear Robert Iger:

We write as professional historians, who are deeply concerned by the continuing reports about ABC's scheduled broadcast of "The Path to 9/11." These reports document that this drama contains numerous flagrant falsehoods about critical events in recent American history. The key participants and eyewitnesses to these events state that the script distorts and even fabricates evidence into order to mislead viewers about the responsibility of numerous American officials for allegedly ignoring the terrorist threat before 2000.

The claim by the show's producers, broadcaster, and defenders, that these falsehoods are permissible because the show is merely a dramatization, is disingenuous and dangerous given their assertions that the show is also based on authoritative historical evidence. Whatever ABC's motivations might be, broadcasting these falsehoods, connected to the most traumatic historical event of our times, would be a gross disservice to the public. A responsible broadcast network should have nothing to do with the falsification of history, except to expose it. We strongly urge you to halt the show's broadcast and prevent misinforming Americans about their history.

Sincerely,

Arthur Schlesinger Sean Wilentz, Princeton University Michael Kazin, Georgetown University Lizbeth Cohen, Harvard University, Nicholas Salvatore, Cornell University; Ted Widmer, Brown University; Rick Perlstein, Independent Scholar; David Blight, Yale University; Eric Alterman, City University of New York. Maurice Isserman, Hamilton College (List in formation)

This could also be label "Censorship of Art". Censorship of the fields of art includes, entertainment, news, docudrama and commentary. Docudrama is art and the democrats want to censor Freedom of Expression and Art. This is heavy handed state censorship, pure and simple.

To be honest private citizens have the right to complain and pressure ABC. However, where I draw the line is when Democrat Senators remind ABC of their broadcasting license. As a federal worker, who had to undergo mandatory classes on fraud, waste and abuse, plus ethics training, what the Dem Senators did would be considered abuse of power for a fed employee. It is like me having a dispute with my neighbor on a fence that borders our properties. It would be wrong for me to tell my neighbor to move his fence by Monday and then remind him that I work for the IRS audit office. Even though I did not threaten to look for his tax return and use my powers to convince my office to conduct an audit, just the appearance of possibly threatening him with my position in the IRS to resolve a dispute is grounds for me to be reprimanded or fired. Especially if there is a witness to the exchange. These Senators submitted their complaint in writing.

Gregg blasts Kerry on war comments

MANCHESTER, N.H. (New Hampshire) Senator Judd Gregg took to the floor of the Senate this week to blast fellow Senator John Kerry for Kerry's criticism of the Bush Administration and the war.

Gregg called Kerry a "Monday morning quarterback" and accused him of _ what he called _ a "viciously partisan attack" on the administration.

Kerry has said the president's policy in Iraq and in the war on terrorism is a failure and has called on Secretary of Defense Donald Rumsfeld to resign.

They commented during a debate Wednesday on a Democratic resolution calling on Rumsfeld to resign. The measure failed.

and listen to the noise coming out of the mouths of people with the letters PhD at the end of their name.

A very long time ago, I worked for Burlington Industries in their corporate travel area; when we booked flights for the PhD's out at the Research Center, we had to write them letters that said, "Go to your car, drive to the airport, take your bag inside..."

If we missed ONE STEP we had to go get them.........LOL.

They left notes like "Have you seen my cizzors?"

'Kerry called the administration's policy politically-based and immoral, even accusing Bush, Rumsfeld and their supporters of using the Sept. 11, 2001 terrorist attacks for their own political gain.

"I think it is immoral to treat 9/11 as a political pawn and to continue to excuse the invasion of Iraq by exploiting the 3,000 mothers and fathers, sons and daughters who were lost on September 11," Kerry said. "They were attacked and killed, I remind the Senate again, not by Saddam Hussein but by Osama bin Laden."

Gregg responded, "It sort of makes you think that if (Kerry) were giving a discussion about the Red Sox, he would not have put Bill Buckner at first. He would not have picked Bucky Dent. He would have given Carlton Fisk his contract. Or he would not have traded Babe Ruth.

"It is a litany as if he is a Monday morning quarterback and had the answer now to what would have been the correct process," Gregg said.

The two senators' comments came on Wednesday during a debate on a Democratic resolution calling on Rumsfeld to resign. The measure failed.

Kerry was the Democratic Party presidential nominee in 2004 and is strongly considering running for President again in 2008. The Massachusetts senator is scheduled to return to New Hampshire Sunday for the first time since May.

Kerry said the administration ignored CIA advice and allowed bin Laden to escape from the Tora Bora mountains in Afghanistan several years ago. He said that as a result of the administration's focus on Iraq, "there are more terrorists in Iraq today than there were on Sept. 11 (2001). "

Kerry said Rumsfeld should be held accountable, saying the Pentagon chief has been "wrong again and again and again. American troops have had to pay the price for that, as has the American taxpayer, and too many Americans have paid with their lives.

"The leaders in this administration have shown they will do anything, say anything, twist any truth and even endanger our nation's character as one America simply to execute a political strategy for the election," Kerry charged.

Kerry said, "The only way to resolve what is happening in the Middle East and Iraq is through diplomatic and political effort." He called for an international summit and said, "There is a total absence of the kind of effort that can help to resolve what is happening in Iraq."

Gregg said the Bush policy in Iraq has freed more than 50 million Iraqis, allowed Afghani women to "move around as they wish" without needing to fear being "shot in soccer stadiums." Gregg noted that Kerry had said the Secretary of Defense should be above politics, but was not.

"So how can you come to the floor of the Senate and make the speech that was just made?" Gregg asked. "It was overtly political,' to use his term, which was for the purpose of exuding a political strategy that if you attack the Secretary of Defense, you weaken the Presidency and will do better in the election. It generates a good press release, and it is a sound bite event to call for the Secretary of defense to resign."

Gregg said the fact that the United States has not been attacked by terrorists for five years is, "in some measure, good luck, good fortune. But it is also the fact that this administration has put into place an aggressive effort to fight terrorism not in America -- Islamic fundamentalism and fascism -- not on our soil but to take the fight to their soil and meet them where they are."

I'm old enough to remember Lily Tomlin's great skit on Laugh-In:

She's dressed as a cheerleader and leads this cheer through her megaphone:

I GOT MY B.A. - GOT MY B.A. DEGREE !

I GOT MY M.A. - GOT MY M.A. DEGREE !

I GOT MY PH.D. DEGREE !

I WISH I COULD FIND ME A J.O.B. !!!!

Accidental misspelling. I'm sure the ''author'' meant to describe Alterman as an ''hysterian''.

Spell checkers just aren't quite up to the job yet, sadly.
