Nancy Reagan Tells Webb Not To Use Video Of Her Husband In Latest Ad
Sep 8, 2006 06:54 PM EDT
Nancy Reagan has ordered Democratic Senate candidate Jim Webb, a former Reagan White House military aide, NOT to use video of her husband praising Webb in an upcoming campaign ad.
A three-paragraph letter from the former first lady's office says the use of footage of President Reagan is "neither authorized nor appropriate."
An ad Webb intends to begin televising Monday features Reagan praising Webb, then an assistant secretary of defense, during the 1985 U.S. Naval Academy commencement ceremony.
On the video Reagan says, "James' gallantry as a Marine in Vietnam won him the Navy Cross and other decorations."
Webb was NOT immediately available for comment.
Former Attorney General Edwin Meese was a Reagan adviser. He calls the ad, "improper, unethical and very possibly illegal."
Webb is running against George Allen in his campaign for Virginia Senate.

Already posted and not breaking news.
And this source has the story wrong. There is no "order" in the letter.
I've met Ed Meese. He's one of the nicest guys you could ever meet. I would guess his analysis is correct.
If he was praised by Reagan, then he was praised by Reagan.
I can't think of any legal reason whatsoever why he might not use the video.
I'd think Allen, though, could make great hay of how much Webb has REJECTED REAGAN since that time.
I don't see a problem with this. What's the big deal?
I don't think Reagan would have approved of his anti-Semitic leaflet, though.
BREAKING NEWS!
God Bless Nancy.
Sorry, Nancy and the Reagan foundation have exclusive rights over Reagan's material.
I'd have to agree that I can't see why the ad would be illegal. Reagan said it and there doesn't seem to be much question that Webb was a hero who earned top awards in combat. What he's done recently is what's in question.
I think the issue is it was praise in one context and now the comments are being used to IMPLY Ronald Reagan is endorsing his 2006 run for office.
If I say X-FID writes nice in his posts, that does not mean I endorse you for United States Supreme Court Justice.
I agree.
So no video footage or speech text of RR can be used without legal approval? Sorry but I don't think so.
Webb has turned traitor to Reagan, the GOP and America.
What he is doing is the equivalent to urinating on Reagan's grave.
"So no video footage or speech text of RR can be used without legal approval?"
When it's used as a political tool I think Nancy Reagan can choose not to have his image and or voice used as a cheap stunt.
Any insight as to what ails Webb
His actions have me confused
Legally it seems he has the right to use what Reagan said about him
But if he goes against every thing Reagan stood for then he is being a real low life
What makes this Reagan's "material?" Rush plays politiicancs' soundbites all the time. TV video snips are shown in ads all the time. The intercource between Webb and Reagan were not for private, copyrighted, commercial purposes.
Even though I support George Allen and not James Webb, all's fair in politics. I see nothing wrong with Webb's using a ten second film clip that praises his record in Vietnam and his appointment as AsstDefSec under Republican President Ronald Reagan. Whether its legal or nor, is a matter for lawyers. And Mrs. Reagan has every right to demand Webb not use the clip.
Apples and oranges.
