Student Newspaper Lampoons Mother of God
TFP Student Action ^ | 09-08-06 | TFP

If someone attacked your mother, would you be upset? Would you protest? I’m sure you would.

Well, the Mother of God is grossly insulted by the University of Virginia’s student newspaper, The Cavalier Daily, which printed a Nativity-like cartoon of Our Lady holding the Infant Jesus beside Saint Joseph on August 24.

The figure depicting Saint Joseph says: "Mary…I don't mean to ruin this special moment, but how did you get that bumpy rash?” suggesting a sexually transmitted disease. To which a Mary-figure says, “I swear, it was Immaculately Transmitted.”

This is outrageous public blasphemy! Click here to protest now.

Well, if God protests, let me know.

Sorry to break it to you this way, but defining Mary as "Mother of God" is a personal faith issue, not necessarily agreed by all, not even by all Christians.

This is not news, this something to be concerned about within your own group of faithful breathren.

The New Testament teaching on the person of Christ is summed up in the three ecumenical creeds: the Apostles', the Nicene, and the Athanasian. Read those and you won't go wrong.

I'm not certain about the others, but as far as I know, teh Apostles' Creed is accepted not only by Catholics, but also all of the Protestant/Reformed denominations, at least the traditional ones (Lutheran, Calvinist, Anglican, etc.).

[ He is fully human and fully divine. If you do not concede that He has a mother, you deny His humanity. ]

I concede his body has a mother.. but Jesus is NOT human....
You make a God of humanity.. thats of course Hinduism.. and to a lesser extent Buddism..
The Spirit of Jesus is one thing, his body is quite another..
The Body of Christ is a metaphor, a pregnant metaphor..
Suggest considering the ramifications of it...

The Spirit of Jesus(the Christ) is eternal his body was just a prop, much like yours is.. for YOU are a spirit too.. You're body will die and you will get another one.. just as Jesus did.. Flesh is flesh, and is fleshly...

That is true, but to infer that Mary had a sexually transmitted disease SHOULD be offensive to ALL Christians.

If you are correct, then the Transfiguration, the Passion, His death, and His Resurrection were pointless. But you're dead wrong. His Body is more than a "prop." You're not just a docetist. You're a gnostic.

Ok, to those of you going back and forth on this thread on whether Jesus as God has a mother or not... do you really expect your opponent to say, "you know, you're right, I'm going to head right down to the Baptist/Catholic Church and sign up to become a Protestant/Catholic."

You're catechising each other. Not the most productive course for a discussion since you both presume the answer.

There's no ancient heresy under the sun that doesn't exist in some sect of modern-day protestantism.

Sure. Some "Christians" think that Jesus was a space alien too. What of it?

The vast majority of Christians have agreed on the "Mother of God" issue since AD 431.

You're catechising each other.

No we're catechising for the benefit of others. A lurking Catholic or Lutheran will learn what his position and language should be, and why. As long as the debate remains civil and avoids circling the same material over and over, there is no harm.

[ Whether unintentional or not, you have just stated heresy. Jesus rose from the dead and ascended into heaven in his glorified body. Jesus still is true God and true man in one person. ]

Heresy is a product of dogma.. This glorified body, what is that?.. Anybody with any sense would say, "I don't know what that is".. Because we don't.. We don't even know what "heaven" is.. Jesus existed long before God invented men.. You seem to be conflicted with dogma of some sort.. I am not..

Suggest considering these things much much more thoughly, with prayer maybe.. God is not human as we (many of us) will not be eventually.. No flame here.. I was a human on my first birth, but after being born again I AM A NEW CREATURE.. as scripture implys and says..
