In the latest categorical rejection of Saddam Hussein's links to al Qaeda Charlie Gibson said the following in an interview with President Bush:
Gibson: And that's the one thing that I question, whether people do have any sense of that. For loathsome as he may have been, Saddam Hussein was not connected to al Qaeda
This isn't just bias. It means that ABC isn't telling the truth now or wasn't telling the truth in some of their previous reporting. Charles Gibson doesn't need to even go outside of his own network to find examples of Saddam Hussein's links to al Qaeda.
Did he even bother? On what grounds is he dismissing the evidence of links between the two sides? Just a few examples of ABC's own reporting that contradict Gibson's hasty assertion can be found with a few moments of Google searching.
On March 23, 2006 ABC reported on the documents recovered in postwar Iraq that revealed that Saddam Hussein had personally approved of meetings with bin Laden and the two sides had (at least) agreed to cooperate on anti-Saudi propaganda and discuss joint operations against "foreign forces" (Americans) in Saudi Arabia.
In 1999, ABC reported numerous examples of Iraqi support for al Qaeda (video here) in a segment where they also covered examples of Iraq's support for Abu Nidal, Abu Abbas and other wanted terrorists.
There is also ABC's report before the invasion about the buildup of al Qaeda forces in Northern Iraq, wholed up with Ansar al Islam.
Also prior to invasion, ABC's own Don Dahler interviewed a number of al Qaeda AND Baathist detainees at a Kurdish prison who detailed the cooperation between Saddam's IIS and al Qaeda members in Northern Iraq.
This is by no means an exhaustive list of links between Saddam Hussein's regime and al Qaeda (www.regimeofterror.com and www.husseinandterror.com are for that purpose) but simply by asking around at his own network Gibson could have realized that there's plenty of reason to think Saddam Hussein had links to al Qaeda. Maybe Gibson just didn't want to know, or worse, didn't want ABC listeners to know.
PING
Who is Charles Gibson?
ABC reporter for "World News Tonight"
Keep digging the hole ABC.
Bump for later read.
How did the president respond and when was this interview?
yeh- but someone needs to make them (ABC) face the music...
Avoided the subject. Which I am really tired of.
The utter defeat of their ABC's leftist political agenda at the voting booth for the third election in a row will do nicely.
I'll tell you what, you are busting your you know what to prove the connection, it's been a passion of mine for years, and he can't be bothers. Pffft.
Some days I really don't know why I bother.
I get Google alerts every day about what is said in the press about this topic and it's really disgusting and today I just was pushed over the limit and thus the need for a rebuttal.
Be nice if the people with far more to lose would do something about it.
For some reason I am told that they don't have the ammunition to do so on this issue, yet...
someone should alert them that this link "ABC's own Don Dahler interviewed a number of al Qaeda AND Baathist detainees " leads to a FreeRepublic thread which has nothing at all to do with thier story...
Saddam Regime Document: Iraqi Intelligence met with Bin Laden in 1995 http://www.freerepublic.com/focus/f-news/1600579/posts
I'm writing one more letter to Josh Bolten, Tony Snow, Karl Rove and the president about this issue and then if they want to play stupid, fine.
let's hope....
Can you dig up the link?
I put a link to it from somewhere else in the original newsbusters piece.
ABRAHAM LINCOLN
Handwritten letter dated Feb. 19, 1998 linking bin Laden and Saddam Hussein
discussing arrival of a secret envoy sent by bin Laden to Iraq.
The signature beneath the letter is a codename, "MDA" - the Mukhabarat.
Those are facts and they don't always help "serious" newsreporters (liberal hacks) in the media. Sorry that info isn't useful.
