Venezuelan hopeful says Chavez to blame if he's killed

Caracas, Sep 7 (EFE).- Manuel Rosales, the main challenger to President Hugo Chavez in December's election, said Thursday that he if he is killed, the responsibility will lie with the incumbent head of state.

"I blame Chavez for whatever may happen to me, because he has given the order for them to ambush me; and if they assassinate me, if something happens to me, the people know it's at Chavez's command," Rosales told reporters during a rally in Caracas.

"The people will take to the streets and bring down this government if they try to prevent me from becoming president of Venezuela. I'm not afraid of Chavez or his ambushes and I'm going to win the presidency of the republic," said Rosales, currently governor of the oil-rich state of Zulia.

On Thursday, the candidate - accompanied by a group of his supporters - toured a poor neighborhood in western Caracas that is mostly pro-Chavez.

Rosales made the accusation against the leftist-populist president two days after apparent Chavez supporters threw rocks in the candidate's direction during his visit to the coastal town of Catia la Mar.

Similar incidents occurred during Rosales' swing through west Caracas, but there were no reports of injuries. On Dec. 3, some 16 million Venezuelans will go to the polls to elect their president for the 2007-2013 term.

Chavez is a clown. His rantings would be brilliant satire if they weren't real. He's an absolute joke.

Then he is quite brave. Do you suppose there is still enough democracy there that he coould openly win the election? Probably not, but we can hope.

He IS a clown. But he is also a thug. The two cardinal rules for dealing with Chavez are: Never overestimate Chavez. And never underestimate Chavez.

Maria Corina Machado is an activitst in Venezuela who has been calling Chavez on his crap for years. She is being charged with treason.

This guy is the definition of thug dictator.

But he has friends like Jimmy Carter to validate him.

He's absolutely up to no good. I fear for this Rosales guy, Chavez is running out of time and likely to lash out like a rattlesnake on his enemies over this. He's cornered. He's firm in thinking he should be dictator for life. He's dangerous, the higher this guy's already powerful popularity goes.

A spate of assassinations might not be so bad for Venezuela right now. Depends on who gets iced.

Chavez tried to overthrow the government back in the 90's. He was thrown in prison when it failed.

His thugs will assassinate his opponent for him.
Cindy Sheehan thinks this is real democracy.

You know what...GWB should get Condi to demand at the UN that this guy isn't to be harmed and if he is, Chavez will be blamed.

Eh, to heck with that. GW should just send a private memo to Chavez...this guy bites it, Chavez should start counting down his last breaths.
