Giuliani, Clinton favorites for 2008 nominations
(CNN) -- Republicans favor former New York Mayor Rudy Giuliani for the GOP presidential nomination in 2008, while Democrats are looking toward Sen. Hillary Rodham Clinton of New York for their nominee, according to a CNN poll released Thursday.
Thirty-one percent of the 432 poll respondents who identified themselves as Republicans chose Giuliani from a list of potential 2008 nominees, according to the survey conducted by Opinion Research Corp. on behalf of CNN.
The next closest choices were Sen. John McCain of Arizona, with 20 percent, and former House Speaker Newt Gingrich, with 12 percent. (View the complete poll results for all potential GOP and Democratic candidates -- PDF)
No other Republican broke out of the single digits, and 14 percent of respondents said they were unsure about their choice.
Among the 517 identifying themselves as Democrats, 37 percent chose Clinton, and 20 percent favored former Vice President Al Gore.
The 2004 Democratic presidential nominee, Sen. John Kerry of Massachusetts, and Kerry's running mate, former Sen. John Edwards of North Carolina, trailed with 11 percent each.
All other Democrats fielded 3 percent or less in the survey, while 8 percent of the respondents said they were unsure about their choice.
Asked if they would only vote for a candidate who opposed the Iraq war at its inception in 2003, 56 percent of Democrats said no, and 41 percent said yes.
In a separate survey conducted of 1,004 adult Americans, 86 percent said they favor Congress passing legislation that would raise the minimum wage.
The surveys were conducted by telephone August 30 to September 2.
The overall margin of error was plus or minus 5 percentage points, except for the minimum wage question, where the margin of error was plus or minus 3 percentage points.

However, if he were to pick a solid conservative as his running mate, preferably someone the stature of Tom Coburn or Jeff Sessions, then I'd have to swallow and support him.
The country cannot endure four years of Hillary Clinton. I do think a northeast moderate (Guilani or Romney) has the best chance to ensure her defeat.
Why did they have to oversample Democrats? I know that someone mentioned about more people register as Democrats. However, I'm not sure how good that number to estimate voters' composition...
Geez. The hypothetical online FReeper polls have more relevence then this poll has. 432 respondants is nothing!
I still contend that social conservatives will not support Giulaini. And since social conservatives are the bulk of the GOP voting block in the primaries, they will prevail.
Vote Republican.
Yessireee!!
The question, in my mind, is will the social conservatives run an independent candidate for the general election if Rudy is nominated? If I understand them well, and I think I do, they will never allow a very pro-choice, pro-gay Republican be elected president.
I heard Rommey speak on Hannity's radio show yesterday. I was impressed with him with his manner of speaking. Does anyone know where he stands on the major issues, like abortion rights. I know Giuliani is reported to be in favor of abortion rights.
He's also more left wing than all of them combined. As regards the tough part, I'm always amazed at the "tough guys" who passed on showing how tough they were by going into the service for a few years.
I know he appointed a number of homosexual democrats to the judiciary. I know the family has had three generations without a man in uniform.
Nobody has formally announced... any discussion here is fueled strictly by who the leftists in the media want to limit Republicans to and I trust nothing from them.
If the war on terror is the premier issue, then someone who is not adverse to, or does not betray Mosiac Law would be the only logical choice.
It is no coincidence Islamic pagans hate Israel, Jews, Christians and Western Civilization. The entire basis of Western Civilization is Mosaic Law, something both the Neo-Pagan Left and the pagan Islamic thugs cannot abide and wish to destroy.
We are in a civilizational struggle that involves more than just bullets and bombs.
And it is incompetent to allow Mrs. Clinton a senate seat to launch a presidential campaign from...
Oh yeah, you've posted it a hundred times already.
If Giuliani is so happy to have Mrs. Clinton remain as his senator, why should any Republican trust that incompetence on the national stage?

My biggest problem with Rudy is that he does'nt appear to have the cojones, or the good sense to run for NY state governor this fall...and prove to us all he can run and win a campaign and govern in an executive setting.

Two liberal New York lawyers with Madison Avenue designer labels...
Laura Ingraham really likes Mitt a lot.
As a Monica Crowley and Mark Levin....
"I'd say Rudy would make a great member of any administration".
"Yeah, he'd have been right at home with Clinton!"
LOL ... I didnt quite mean it that way, but okay.
