Malodour on the dancefloor

NIGHTSPOTS are being forced to pump out perfume because the new smoking ban is failing to disguise body odours.

Air fresheners and scented oils are being deployed in a bid to banish smells caused by sweaty revellers. Licensed trade chiefs say venues are turning some people away because of poor hygiene, which was covered up before by the smell of cigarette smoke.

Kay Bennett, of Edinburgh city centre nightclub Cabaret Voltaire, said: "If you walk into a club with a few hundred people dancing, you notice a smell. It's a combination of BO, bodily functions, alcohol and sweat."

Michael McHugh, of the Scottish Licensed Trade Association, said: "Often you see a gap at the bar because people move away from someone who smells

The folks that claim smokers stink turn out to be the smelly ones.

Hey at bay! Pull my finger and I'll cover for ya!

It's a combination of BO, bodily functions, alcohol and sweat."

This simply says that smoke from tobacco is more offensive than the above list.

Hi All-

"...If you walk into a club with a few hundred people dancing, you notice a smell. It's a combination of BO, bodily functions, alcohol, and sweat..."

Is that any worse than the earlier combination of thick smoke, BO, bodily functions, alcohol, and sweat?

I interperated that it meant smoke was preferable to the above list.

Just noted as an unintended consequence, Ray.

Then why didn't they have to resort to pumping in perfume when people were smoking?

With tobacco smoke, everybody would smell equally bad.

Smoke is stinkier and it destroys one's ability to smell odors. If it didn't destroy one's ability to smell odors, smokers wouldn't be able to stand themselves.

So smoking is an equalizing, democratic thing then, correct?

Then why the perfume-pumping?

Thinking of all the clubs I spent my youth in (or some would say mispent), there was always the obligatory strawberry or coconut scented smoke machine by the DJ booth.

I'm curious of the "body functions" in the equation here. Is that just a polite way of saying swamp gas?
