SHOCK and confusion greeted the decision by an Indonesian appeals court to sentence four more members of the Bali Nine to death.
Prosecutors were only seeking life sentences, but Indonesia's Supreme Court said Scott Rush, 20, Tan Duc Thanh Nguyen, 23, Si Yi Chen, 21, and the youngest of the group, 19-year-old Matthew Norman, should face the firing squad.
They will join Bali Nine ringleaders Andrew Chan, 22, and Myuran Sukumaran, 25, on death row for their role in trying to smuggle 8.3kg of heroin to Australia last April.
The Supreme Court, Indonesia's highest judicial authority, confirmed the death sentences for Chan and Sukumaran.
A separate panel of judges spared drug mules Michael Czugaj, 21, and Martin Stephens, 30, ruling they should serve life.
Rush went to the Supreme Court to appeal against his life sentence, while prosecutors had lodged appeals seeking to overturn the High Court's decision to cut life terms for Nguyen, Chen and Norman to 20 years.
Prosecutors were not seeking the death penalty for the four; but the Supreme Court imposed it anyway.
"This narcotics problem is a very heavy criminal act and is very dangerous for the people and the country, not only Indonesia, but also other countries," said the chief judge in their Supreme Court case, Iskandar Kamil.

Didn't they just release some terrorists?
Too bad -- I thought the Bali Nine were the bombers there.
You're expecting CONSISTENCY from the Indonesian judicial system?????
Yup - kill those with naughty vegetables but release the bombers who murdered tourists.
I suppose that would make sense to a WOD warrior.

The laws in these countries are clear. Yes, they are harsh but they don't have the problems that we do with stoned out people making a mess of other people's lives.
If you want to do an actuarial study, drug dealers as a group have killed an order of magnitude more than terrorists have. Without drugs, our prisons would be sparely populated, millions of ghetto kids wouldn't be living in crack hell and tens of thousands wouldn't be destitute wards of the state.
Get rid of all the drug laws and the middle class kids won't have to worry about their weekend reefer flings anymore, (except for the 10% that go on to heaver stuff) but millions of more kids are still going to watch their crack whore mom do $20 tricks.
Sorry. No sympathy for these punks. It would be OK with me to watch them swinging from a rope beside bin laden. They both seek the same havoc -- one for profit and the other for Allah.
My sentiments, Exactly!
Allow me to add at this point that "Naughty Vegetables" would be a GREAT name for a rock band.
Eliminate the black market and there is no extreme profit from this business. But this logic escapes the grasp of most WOD warriors like yourself.
Dude, I'm not even considering the turf wars. I'm talking about the ruined, truncated, wasted lives that results from taking that poison. That is where 90% of the misery is. I'm kind of happy when I see the dealers firing each other up. Hell, I'd give them heavier weapons.
