6 armed people holed up at high school in northeastern Arizona Six armed people were holed up Wednesday at a high school in northeastern Arizona, authorities said.
It was unclear whether the six were holding students hostage at Ganado High School or whether the six armed people were students.
A male was armed with a gun, while five females had knives, said Jim Benally, police chief for Window Rock, a nearby community.
Authorities said the incident began around mid-afternoon and that police sealed off the area around the school.

Council divided over Muslim resolution...

GALLUP — If the City Council passes a resolution on its agenda Tuesday evening condemning any offense against its Muslim community, it's unlikely to do so unanimously.
In a recent Letter to the Editor, Councilwoman Mary Ann Armijo argues that such religious matters are none of the council's business.
The proposal stems from The Independent's decision last month to reprint cartoons of the prophet Mohammed that after they were published by a handful of European newspapers sparked violent protests among Muslim communities around the globe.
In a prepared statement, Jamal Jawad blasted The Independent during the council's last meeting for betraying the local Muslim community's trust by reprinting cartoons it knew would offend them. A local Presbyterian pastor and a Lutheran followed Jawad, criticizing The Independent's decision and asking the council to condemn any persecution of the community.
Mayor Bob Rosebrough enthusiastically directed the city manager to prepare a resolution for the council's next meeting.
The resolution facing the council Tuesday evening blames The Independent for increasing tensions within the community and expresses support for its local Muslims.
"The City of Gallup does not condone any form of offense to the Muslim community or any other group of its citizens in any form," it reads.
In her letter, Armijo writes that, although she does not condone The Independent's decision to reprint the cartoons, "it is not my place as a city councilor to pass a resolution or otherwise intrude upon such a religious matter."
"The greatest thing about our country is freedom of speech," she writes.
Even when that freedom offends people, she adds, they ought to be secure enough in their faith to withstand such challenges.

RV Park sign raises questions of religious, national loyalty

GALLUP — A controversial message on a sign at a local business has caused concern among some residents and city officials.
"Whom do you support, America and our troops or Islam. ... You can't support both," is the message prominently displayed sign in front of the USA RV Park, 2925 W. Hwy. 66.
"Anytime you see something that singles out a race, religion or ethnic group, it often results in falsehoods," said Eric Honeyfield, Gallup city manager. "Personally, I am offended by the sign, but it is a right in a democratic society," said Honeyfield, who is part Lebanese.
USA RV Park owner Gene Dolney refused to speak to The Independent as conveyed by the facility manager who also refused to give his name. Observers said the sign was put up a couple of weeks ago.
Honeyfield questioned the impression such a sign would leave with not only residents but also visitors to Gallup, making the assumption that all of Islam is the enemy in the war on terror, and not just the radicals.
On Monday, members of the local Islamic community expressed their concerns to Mayor Bob Rosebrough.
"What he (Dolney) is reflecting is totally wrong," said Ehab Maadi. "All of us should stand together. He is not just hurting Muslims but America and what it stands for." Maadi said he has lived in Gallup for 12 years and has never had a problem with racism such as this.
Maadi said the sign was brought to his attention by a customer who was going to stay at the RV park but decided not to when he read the sign.
Nash Khalaf has been in Gallup for 31 years and said he is a citizen and loyal to the United States. Khalaf had spoken to Rosebrough and was told the city would attempt to address the matter.
The Independent obtained a copy of the letter Rosebrough sent to Dolney Wednesday requesting he take down the sign "which attacks the Islamic faith."

At first glance, I thought I read "trigger finger".
I've got DirectTV and turned on the local Phoenix channels (Something I normally don't do. Too many pastels, coyotes,cactii and stuff for me) hoping to hear something. All they are showing are mudslinging ads for Pederson and Simon. A couple idiots trying to unseat Kyl and Renzi. Those two 'RAT losers are really getting desperate.The Phoenix Ken and Barbies don't really care what is going on up on the Rez. It's too bad.
Eh, it's more that when you have a breaking story about something bad happening and it becomes pretty clear the perpetrators were not Muslim, illegal aliens, or gay, interest in the story suddenly grinds to a halt and the number of posts per hour on the thread suddenly plummets.
