STEVE Irwin had embarrassed millions of Australians, Germaine Greer said last night.
And those who had mourned him with their tributes at the Irwin family's Australia Zoo in what the British had labelled "a Princess Diana moment" were idiots, she said.
British-based Greer wrote in The Guardian newspaper after Irwin's death that the animal world had taken revenge on "self-deluded animal tormentor Steve Irwin".
Last night, she went even further.
She told Channel 9's A Current Affair she did not understand Australians' feelings of loss for Irwin.
She said he had exploited animals by telling the world how dangerous they were and then treating them disrespectfully.
"I find the whole Steve Irwin phenomenon (embarrassing) -- and I'm not the only person who did," Greer said.
But when pushed, she was unable to name anyone who had publicly agreed with her.
She rejected claims her sentiments were "un-Australian".
"I don't care what I'm being called," Greer said.
"I just hope I'm out of touch with what idiots are thinking."

"Steve Irwin was unabashedly, thoroughly, in-your-face male. Greer loathes men, and Irwin epitomized what she loathes."
We have a winner.
Steve was a good man and loved by most of us.
TimesDomain could have expressed some compassion for Steve but in my opinion he simply stated the obvious..
Irwin made a fatal mistake by swimming above an animal whose only defense from predators is a spike at the base of its tail. The creatures are non-aggressive, clumsy, and rarely make their mark when they go into their defensive mode. Steve, unfortunately, provoked the ray and it killed him.
I have the unfortunate experience of being on the receiving end of a stingray barb. I was fortunate that it was merely a slice to the bone, rather than a puncture wound.
If you've ever been stabbed by a catfish fin, you know it's painful. Multiply that by three and you can imagine what a stingray barb feels like. It's pure poison. I'm not surprised Steve pulled it out of his chest as quickly as he did because it is so painful.
RIP Steve
Wonder if she's wondering how many will mourn her?
I can't think of anything bad enough to call her.
NONE will mourn her and the sooner the better!
Whatever one thinks of Steve Irwin and what he did, he was known for something, for some activity. This woman dissing him is known for being known!
Good God, looks like a uncooked turkey.
Who the heck is that?
An actress? I don't ever recall seeing her face anywhere.
>I had never even heard of her before she decided to starting trashing Irwin after his death.<
She was a major force in women's liberation back in the 60's. She wrote a bunch of books, the most well known of which is titled, "The Female Eunuch".
Before she surfaced recently to bash the late Crocodile Hunter, her target had been that most horrible symbol of "male oppression", the bra.
"It's better to be silent and thought a fool than to speak and remove all doubt."
"Some cause happiness wherever they go, others whenever they go"
Good point however I think using his child in the one episode was over the top, one never knows what could happen, he could have tripped and fell and the kid could have gotten killed or maimed.
I got no problems if he uses himself for such demonstrations but a young child in such a needless situation is just nuts.
