WASHINGTON, Sept. 4 As they prepare for a critical pre-election legislative stretch, Congressional Republican leaders have all but abandoned a broad overhaul of immigration laws and instead will concentrate on national security issues they believe play to their political strength.
With Congress reconvening Tuesday after an August break, Republicans in the House and Senate say they will focus on Pentagon and domestic security spending bills, port security legislation and measures that would authorize the administrations terror surveillance program and create military tribunals to try terror suspects.
We Republicans believe that we have no choice in the war against terror and the only way to do it is to continue to take them head-on whether it is in Iraq or elsewhere, said Representative John A. Boehner of Ohio, the majority leader.
Or a missed opportunity to divide ourselves just before the election. Depends on your viewpoint. I suspect that anything that had a chance of passage was not going to be to your liking, so what you see as an "opportunity to win big" was never actually a possible outcome.
I don't like the political facts in this case either, I wish that we had a ceonservative Senate, I wish that we didn't have Eleven Democratic Senators in Red States: 2 in Arkansas, 2 in North Dakota, 2 in West Virginia, 1 in Indiana, 1 in Louisiana, 1 in Montana, 1 in South Dakota, 1 in Nebraska. And this doesn't even count the RINOs.
I can understand a RINO from Maine, I can't understand a Liberal froo North or SOuth Dakota.
There is nothing divisive about immigration. Fruitgrowers and chicken and beef processors want cheap labor and the rest of the country wants illegals deported back to their home countries - mainly Mexico.
If only it were so simple. There are anchor babies, and the fact that they are not going to just leave because we ask them to. We need to stem the tide first and shut down the border, once this is done we can sort out the mess we have built over the paet twenty five years...
Republicans should remind voters in ads that if Dems win the House, they can expect amnesty for all illegals, because they want illegals to be able to vote Democrat in the '08 presidential elections. This should be a prime issue in this fall's elections.
"This is probably a smart move to pickup Immigration in the next Congress.."
That's what they always say.
"We'll tackle this or that in the next congress."
Yeah right.
It is dead Jim!!!!! ANother anti-american piece of legislation dies.
"Iraq a HUGE winner for Republicans."
Is this sarcasm? Iraq will be the biggest reason why the republicans lose the house of representatives if they do.
That is what the Drive-By Media wants you to think. They don't want to win the War on Terror, they think that it is too scary.
Things that are worth achieving don't all come wrapped in nice tidy boxes, sometimes they require determination and patience. If you want to buy into the pessemism of the Liberals, and their masters the DBM, then go for it. I'm not buying it.
Iraq was a necessary and critical battle in the War on Terror, and it is really two separate battles, the first we won in three weeks when we toppled Saddam, the second we are in the process of winning.
"This is probably a smart move to pickup Immigration in the next Congress.."
LOL!!! roflmao!!!!!!!!!!!
Aztlan WINS! Another year of unrestricted, unrestrained immigration.....
Unless the immigration reform includes some form of amnesty which is all you are going to pass with this Congress, so better to wait for a better chance to get what you want. Versus trying to ram something through that no one will like.
It is time for the GOP to show that they have the stomach for a fight.
With this Democrat/RINO Senate control of this issue, they have shown that they don't have the stomach for any fight you would be happy with, so better to not do it at all.
Political reality is a bitch.
LOL.....I am surprised you quoted a rabid homosexual who asked conservatives to vote for Jean Kerry in the 2004 elections.
Why should any conservative take a Dem-loving moron like Sullivan seriously???
While I agree nothing will be passed before the election to benefit the citizens of this nation, I disagree that the WOT doesn't include illegal immigration. The mex and the muz are working together, whether we want to admit it to ourselves or not, and this is a reality of the WOT. People are angry because nothing is being done, and most people of voting age know DC normally sticks it to the people on huge issues after an election, and '08 isn't that far away.
For most people, the immigration issue is an economic one, not a security one. There is no way we are going to harden our total border against a determined terrorist infiltration. we simply have too much coastline and too much wilderness to keep a determined terrorist out, esp when they can come visit legally for personal business in most cases.
So although you'd like to frame it as a WoT issue, that is a completely different problem to solve--
How to keep any terrorist from entering the country at any time.
is quite a different question than
How to keep illegals from coming to this country and taking jobs and social services that are costing us money.
You're delusional.
Remember Max Cleland.
we will have to agree to disagree, otherwise I'll start throwing the truth at you, and I'm LOL at your belief of the WOT and illegals aren't tied together.
Which is to say the House is stnding pat. Movement toward their position must come from the President and the Senate.
