G.O.P. Sets Aside Work on Immigration

WASHINGTON, Sept. 4 — As they prepare for a critical pre-election legislative stretch, Congressional Republican leaders have all but abandoned a broad overhaul of immigration laws and instead will concentrate on national security issues they believe play to their political strength.

With Congress reconvening Tuesday after an August break, Republicans in the House and Senate say they will focus on Pentagon and domestic security spending bills, port security legislation and measures that would authorize the administration’s terror surveillance program and create military tribunals to try terror suspects.

“We Republicans believe that we have no choice in the war against terror and the only way to do it is to continue to take them head-on whether it is in Iraq or elsewhere,” said Representative John A. Boehner of Ohio, the majority leader.

In other words, Dems' position is just as laid out in the Time piece on Pelosi last week.

"Border security IS part of the WOT."

If there is an "incident" just prior to the election, and it comes out that the perp/perps got in through our porous borders, the Republicans are going to be blamed and the citizenry are going to believe it.

Have you ever been to Northern Minnesota or Michigan, there is no way in the world we are going to close the border between now and the election to stop a determined terrorist. Not going to happen.

I feel a lot better about it now that I know my current congressrino won't be voting on it. I want Tim Walberg to vote on it when he takes office after the election.

"The single-issue people weren't going to be happy with anything that has a chance of passing anyway, so why go through the exercise? "

And WOT is not a "single" issue? All the people in the Southwest worried about AQ on their streets?

Bad mistake.

1) Iraq a HUGE winner for Republicans.

2) Killing this bill is a huge winner for Republicans, and, if you were at all attentive to what was happening here months ago, ANYONE would have preferred to see this bill die.

3) It's one more reason to vote Republican in the fall, for the Dems FOR SURE will bring up an amnesty bill if they control the House.

Your right about the Northern border, however, Canada is not a third world country. They are not as corrupt as Mexico.

As for the election, no doubt the Repubs. will wait to do something after the election. They will merge something with the Senate.

The reason is obvious. It's easier to pass a stupid bill right after their fresh election and then spend almost two years of the Citizens collective memory to try and erase that vote.

No the War on Terror is not a single issue, it is the defining issue of our times. Everything else is secondary and only becomes critical as it pertains to the War on Terror. But we have an enemy inside our country with a mascot that is the Donkey, and they do not want to win the war on terror, and so keeping them from playing political tricks with the Immigration issue is key to the War on Terror.

See, if the Dems get the House then we are in grave danger of greatly hurting our chances to win the War on Terror. So they must not win.

If we lose the War, the rest doesn't matter.

"What Democrat will you be helping to elect by staying home? Are they in agreement with you on Immigration? Who is your Congressman?"

(1) I already have a Dem representative.

(2) No.

(3) Too personal of info.

You have it exactly right, MineralMan. As soon as all those lame duck Republicans come back after the election, they will open the borders even wider and write it into law and collect their new job and their big check. They all know that congress is going to be a joke pretty soon anyway since the deal is already done, so it's not that important to be re-elected when there will be no power involved anymore anyway.

"Oh great plan .. instead of getting a chance of closing the border in the future .. the Dems will guarantee an open border for all plus all the benefits they can give."

And that is any different from what we have now? BOTH Parties have the same view on Immigration now: Open Borders For All.

Sadly, we won't see any change until we get rid of George Bush in 2008, I fear.

Feel free to stay home then, the Republican candidate will apreciate the message you are sending him by not voting. You will be punishing him for the actions of others and telling him (or her) that you don't want a change of representation in your district and that things are just fine with your Dem.

"1) Iraq a HUGE winner for Republicans"

LOL. You serious? It's a loser, and still losing.

Repubs need to run on local issues, which include immigration. AQ is not on Main Street. And if they show, Bush will be blamed.

If I do vote, it will be to get rid of a Dem incumbent, not to reward a Repub incumbent....

Iraq is only a losing issue among liberals and other moonbats, the rest of us realize that War is hell, and that important things take time, and the Iraq was a necessary battle in this War, both logistically and strategically.

Time will prove that this killing ground/"flypaper" strategy was sound. And in another five years maybe we'll have had as many casualties as the Left predicted for the first week of fighting.

Not sold on that one bit. There's always more than one issue. This policy hands them the political trick...Dem commercials Saying they will "do" something about immigration, not revealing what they really want to do.

Centralizing on Bush's latest talking point will center the Repubs on Bush --- not something they want to do.

But hey ... guess some things have to be learned the hard way

Hope you like your plan .. cause the dems WILL give it to you
