“Lebanese Security” Is the Pretext for the Naval Babel around Lebanon’s Shores
Debka ^ | 9-4-06

The extraordinary buildup of European naval and military strength in and around Lebanon’s shores is way out of proportion for the task the European contingents of expanded UNIFIL have undertaken: to create a buffer between Israel and Hizballah.

Close investigation by DEBKAfile’s military and intelligence sources discloses that “Lebanese security” and peacemaking is not the object of the exercise. It is linked to the general anticipation of a military clash between the United States and Israel, on one side, and Iran and possibly Syria on the other, some time from now until November

This expectation has brought together the greatest sea and air armada Europe has ever assembled at any point on earth since World War II: two carriers with 75 fighter-bombers, spy planes and helicopters on their decks...

What a joke. One US carrier battle group is stronger. And we have dozens. Nevermind the Israeli land based forces in the area.

Never mind that, but where exactly was the sea and air armada that Europe assembled in WWII? I can't remember it.

Sadly, I think I know whose side the European fleet is going to be on. Not ours.

Interesting article. One theory says the Euro's are there in larger than necessary numbers because they believe the US and/or Israel may go to war against Iran and Syria. As a result, the Iranians may launch missles at Europe. Why would they go after Europe?Wouldn't they target Israel or US interests?Would Europeans actively intervene(militarily) to stop the US if in fact we attack Iran?Did i misunderstand?

The sad thing is that the French and Italians are deploying their capital ships without good anti-aircraft support. The Forbin/Horizon AA frigates are still being built.

I wonder wonder what the Germans are using. If they are using their new Sachsen class destroyers. That would give three ships capable of taking out modern missles.

Europe is not Babel. Europe is a subcontinent on the western part of Eurasia.

Why would they go after Europe? Wouldn't they target Israel or US interests?

Why did those Lebanese terrorists in Germany try to bomb the trains there? Germany isn't fighting in Iraq. Why did terrorists bomb a Fremch ship off Yemen? As far as the Islamists are concerned, Europeans are infidels. Any Muslims who get killed in the process are just collateral damage.

"One theory says the Euro's are there in larger than necessary numbers"

They aren't. Little chance that UNFIL will grow to 15.000 people as was planned.

"Would Europeans actively intervene(militarily) to stop the US if in fact we attack Iran?"

Of course not.

Beat me to it. Funniest thing in that whole article...

Let's see... the French have ONE aircraft carrier which spends six months a year in dry dock. I wonder if this is the half-year when it is actually operational...

I found this article interesting in that my newphew is on the USS Wasp which headed out for Lebanon last week - post haste! Is there anyway to know what other US Naval vessels are also in the area?

Are you saying that if under attack by the US and/or Israel,Iran would nuke Europe before Israel? What would be the point?Wouldn't the Iranians be thinking strategically?

If we attack eIran it may be that one of the very first tasks will be to sink the European fleet in the Eastern Med.
