He was killed in a freak accident in Cairns, police sources said. It is understood he was killed by a sting-ray barb that went through his chest.
He was swimming off the Low Isles at Port Douglas filming an underwater documentary and that's when it occured.

I had a incident about 20 years ago when I went on a commercial fish trawler that was owned by my brother. I was helping with the nets, and the boom swung the catch over the top of my head as I ducked under. I heard my brother screaming for me to get out of the way and then I discovered why. A huge manowar was hanging on the net and the stringers ended up draped over my head and shoulders. he would not touch them with his bare hands and ran to get some gloves. I just pulled them off. He was freaked out.
To make a long story short, I was not affected at all. I thought it was just one of those freak things, but I later came in contact with one while swimming in Escambia Bay. Again, .......nothing.
Apparently I am, or was immune to the toxin for some reason. I guess I will never know.
Darn shame about Steve, but he died doing what he loved to do. Not too many can make that claim.
It's a shame, just the same.

You must be a barrel of laughs at a party or any other kind of gathering. Hope I'm never at one of them. Every party has a pooper & I guess he elected himself! Too bad he uses the name on FR, of a much more caring person!

He was a vocal supporter of John Howard according to the internet, so whether he was conservtive as in American conservatism may be be a matter of debate, he was it seems a conservative for Australian politics though

He went out doing what he loved doing. My prayers go to his wife and two small children. It seems ironic that those who spend a lot of time around animals ends up getting killed or maimed by them.

There's some new Israeli-made sunscreen that's supposed to keep jellyfish from stinging you. Jellyfish don't sting each other, so the sunscreen contains the same proteins that are present on the jellyfish membrane.

I remember that episode. One of the pilots took him up in an F-15. They had a camera on him in the cockpit and the pilot pushed it until he passed out momentarily from the G-force. It was hilarious.

I like Jeff Corwin a lot, but I guess its beause I have a twisted sense of humor too. I do get fed up with all the "destruction of habbitat" and evolution stuff however.

The last time I saw Corwin he talked about global warming and destruction of habitat, plus I think he is gay.

It was a wild ride, Steve. You were crazy, but fun to watch. Thanks for some great programs. How I hope you found God's grace ere the end. That about says it all

I can't believe it. My 7 year old and I would watch his show together. I loved the way he kidded around, joked and played pranks with his staff so lovingly. Thank you Steve for all the wonderful memories my son and I will have of you. Your death is BIG! I am in tears, as the world will be tomorrow as the awake to this awful news!
