My 8 year old is going to freak out.

My 21 year old just did. He loved him. Watched his shows all the time. I'm in tears here. His poor wife and kids. They are going to be devistated.

His mom was killed in a car [cr]ash?

She was killed by a drunk driver outside the gate to Australia Zoo a few years ago while he was filming the movie he made.

That's some lecture.... It's not a good party unless there's one guy in the kitchen arguing some inane point that is obvious to everyone else but he thinks is really profound :~)

Thanks, couldn't have said it better!

I feel so bad for Terri. They are usually joined at the hip and do everything together. I hope she won't be too hard on herself.

Whether he took excessive risks or not, it is indeed evident that he loved animals, all the way from 15 foot crocs down to a little mudworm.

His enthusiasm was completely infectious, and his appetite for life seemed immense.

I thought he was a great showman, a ballsy guy, seemed like a good person and was an advocate for his non-human charges.

Yup - he got a lot of kids interested in animals and the outdoors, that might not have been otherwise interested. Just about every show that followed his, pales in comparison to his - he had a rare personality - he could communicate with adults down to little kids - not too many TV personalities can do that.

"His show was one of the first that made learning about wildlife fun and exciting."

Marlon Perkins was a bore, wasn't he?

That was great! I remember that. I am really going to miss that guy. A few years ago I use to watch him regular basis. I think I got tired of it and tuned out. However, every once in a while I would watch his show.

Most injuries occur when a victim steps on an unsuspecting stingray lying in the sand resulting in a defensive move by the stingray. The injury begins as a puncture wound when the spine penetrates the skin and then becomes a jagged laceration as the spine is withdrawn and the recurved teeth inflict further injury while venom is injected into the wound. The sheath remains behind in fragments in the wound so that the wound contains a foreign body (the sheath), a venom, seriously damaged tissue and inevitably bacterial contamination. The result is a complicated injury that requires extensive treatment and a prolonged healing time. A few deaths have occurred when the spine penetrated either the chest or abdomen

Some of these wounds will be severe either due to the size of the animal (stingray) or the potency of the venom (stonefish). The stingray wound may require surgical exploration and debridement to remove foreign material and damaged tissue. The stonefish injury may require the administration of an anti-venom, which itself may be hazardous.

Prevention is accomplished by avoiding contact with the animal, which sounds simple, but may not be in conditions of poor visibility, currents, confined areas or other environmental limitations. Divers should not attempt to handle, tease, feed or annoy any marine animal. Exploring a crevice with your hand is a good way to receive an injury from a concealed animal defending itself. Do not allow a current to force you against a fixed object which may be covered with hostile critters. Protective clothing is very important. Make an effort to find out which animals you may encounter in your dive, and learn about their characteristics and habitats before you begin the dive.

No one is pretending it's unexpected, we actually are shocked this happened! He knew his limits with creatures he interacted with. Sorry you only see negativity in a loss to everyone who admired him for what he did & taught us!

I am still trying to come to terms with it, its so shocking. I saw him mostly on the Jay Leno show and some times with Conan..his enthusiasm always unbridled. I remember at one time on Conan, he was leaping on and off the couch every 10 seconds, and Conan said, in a deadpan fashion his finger on his lips: "You seem a little low today, should I get you some coffee ?"

Steve was an iconic figure, and Australia's de facto ambassador to the world. He will be missed.

And don't forget Jacques Cousteau lost his son Phillipe Cousteau in an airplane accident.

A friend of my dad's was a pilot who used to fly for Cousteau. Apparently, he was not nice to work for and used to maket the pilots fly in unsafe conditions.

Back to the main subject- sad loss of Steve Irwin.

Well there is an asshole in every crowd and you are it! During online polls when asked: Do you support terrorism? You would be the 1% to say yes.

Your post needs to be repeated over & over! Thanks!
