Sao Paulo, Sep 3 (EFE).- Brazilian former President Fernando Henrique Cardoso accused the country's current leader, Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva, of presiding over "a republic of scoundrels" in an editorial published Sunday in the Sao Paulo daily O Estado.
The piece was in keeping with Cardoso's strenuous campaign to prevent Lula's reelection in the Oct. 1 vote, despite the fact that all the opinion polls taken to date say the president's triumph is a certainty.
"How is it possible that in the face of so much moral disaster people can vote to consolidate a presidential situation whose sins are exposed without remorse, and even with jubilation, by those who consider themselves to be already victorious" in the election, said Cardoso, who governed Brazil for two terms from 1995-2003. ...
Cardoso recalled that, amid the corruption scandals that last year backed Lula's government into a corner, the president justified as "normal" the existence of hidden and parallel accounts to finance his election campaign.
He listed in the article cases of alleged bribes in Congress or fraud in buying ambulances for the government, among other things, and adds that "all that ... (occurred) under the cynical gaze of the Great Godfather who, being above good and evil, doesn't lead Brazil, but rather a republic of scoundrels."

All the recent voter surveys give Lula about 50 percent of voters' support, while Alckmin's momentum has stalled between 20 and 25 percent.
On Saturday, in a meeting with mayors in Rio de Janeiro, Lula warned his followers that the last three weeks of the campaign "will be tough" ...
However, he reiterated that his campaign slogan was "peace and love," and he said that nothing will change the course of the election or will alter his decision to avoid "low blows" ...
