Correction: Jerry Lewis is Hosting MDA Telethon Tonight
AP | 9-3-06 | my favorite headache

Posted on 09/03/2006 12:14:18 PM PDT by My Favorite Headache

Saw this just breaking...Jerry Lewis will not host the annual MDA telethon for the first time ever due to a sudden illness...Ed McMahon will take his place as full time host this year.

Lewis has battled a number of illnesses over the last 12 years but always managed to host the 21.5 hour show...even on oxygen.

A taped opening filmed on August 31st on the Vegas strip with him stopping traffic with an orchestra at 2 am will still be shown but Lewis is too ill to do the show live.

Jerry's '60s and 70's movies are pretty cringe-worthy

The Nutty Professor is pretty damn funny. It's a classic film.

The renaissance filmmaker

His films - including such classics as "The Nutty Professor" (1963), "The Bellboy" (1960), "The Ladies' Man" (1961) and "The Family Jewels" (1965) - have grossed more than $800 million. His best films are those in which he was actor and some combination of producer, director and writer or wore all four hats.

The franchise

Lewis always was boffo at the box office. Films featuring Lewis and Dean Martin were voted by film exhibitors as the top box-office attractions six years in a row in the '50s. When the pair split and Lewis pursued his own film career, he received the top honor for six more years. Several of the early films Lewis made when he went out on his own have been remade, including "Nutty Professor" with Eddie Murphy playing Lewis' parts. Two are in the works: "The Bellboy," with Jackie Chan, and "Cinderfella" (no cast details).

The inventor

Lewis invented - and patented - the "video assist," a video camera linked to a motion-picture lens, for "Cinderfella" in 1960. This allowed directors to immediately view the take rather than waiting for daily rushes. It quickly became standard equipment on most movie sets.

The academic

He taught filmmaking at USC and wrote a book, "The Total Filmmaker," based on almost 500 hours of lectures. Dale Melgaard, former instructor in UNLV's film department, once noted that Lewis is still a legend on the Southern California campus.

The peer

Lewis has earned the respect of such legendary filmmakers as Steven Spielberg, George Lucas, Woody Allen and Peter Bogdanovich as well as the Los Angeles Film Critics Association, which gave him a lifetime achievement award in 2004.

Putting "talent" and "Celine Dion" in the same sentence is like putting "sane" in the same sentence with "Al Gore

I'm going to disagree there. Celine Dion has a magnificent set of pipes.

I saw one of those 'entertainment' news shows last night while channel surfing. They had a promo interview with Jerry Lewis about this weekend's telethon. He recently had a heart attack and had an angioplasty. He looked fine, but was using a motorized wheelchair to get around.

Putting "sane" in the same sentence as "Al gore" is like putting "well crafted analogy" in the same sentence as "Screamname."

Celine Dion is a magnificent talent.

Is it possible this headline is an error? I have not heard this news anywhere else. No one else has reported it. I figure it would be big news. I hope Jerry is OK in any case.

Please, Celine Dion has to be one of the most annoying human beings I have ever seen in my life. If she were any more plastic, any more full of it, she`d be John Kerry. She`s the French version of Barbara Striesand, and when you add France plus Barbara Striesand you get hell on earth.

Check out the DVDs that have come out recently of their early TV appearances on the Colgate Comedy Hour, which more accurately reflects the way they slayed live audiences

While their Colgate Comedy Hour stuff might have made audiences laugh uproariously back in the 1950s (and gives us an idea of what their live nightclub performances were like), I find that those live Colgate appearances hasnt aged well. (Though DONT get me wrong. I still prefer Dean and Jerry's Colgate Comedy Hour programs to anything they produce today)

I much prefer their movies where they are mcuh more disciplined. That is, sticking to the structure of a script, and the movies are subjected to editing before being seen by their audiences.

I think this info is a bit faulty. Its true that he invented the video assist, but I believe it isnt true that he patented it. I think he said something about neglecting to patent it.

If he had patented it, he would be getting royalties from every camcorder manufacturer in the world.

ALL: The next time you go to a store that sells camcorders with the video assist attached, remember: Jerry Lewis invented that. :-)
