CA: Bills Await the Governor's Signature
LAT ^ | Sept. 3, 2006 | Nancy Vogel

During the legislative session that ended Thursday, lawmakers sent hundreds of bills to Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger for his signature or veto in the next 30 days. They include:

Driver's licenses: Bill would allow California to issue driver's licenses for driving only, not for use as identification, to people who cannot prove they are in the country legally. (SB 1162 by Sen. Gil Cedillo, D-Los Angeles)

National popular vote: California would join a compact of states that agree to award their Electoral College votes to the presidential candidate who wins the most votes nationwide, not the candidate who wins the most votes in each state (AB 2948)

Universal healthcare: Bill would create a California health insurance system to provide health insurance to every Californian (SB 840)

Gays in textbooks: Bill would ban the state Board of Education and school districts from adopting textbooks that "reflect adversely" on people because of their sexual orientation. (SB 1437)

Toilets: Bill would require installation of toilets that use less than an average of 1.6 gallons per flush in new homes, schools and office buildings starting in 2009. (AB 2496)

i look at CA and the US and think that 20 years ago no one could even imagine some of the ridiculous bills being created these days. These laws may not get signed now, but will certainly get signed in the future.

the world turns more liberal and the framework for the one world govt keeps on building...

It's simply that California is filled with "new immigrants" - both legal and illegal and they have changed the voting patterns of the state dramatically.

California elected Reagan and Pete Wilson as governor and George Murphy to the senate. It was a "swing" state in presidential elections. Now, no one to the right of Arnold can get elected statewide.

Unfortunately, massive immigration will have the same effect on the rest of the country over time - moving us far to the left.

What "compact of states" would that be? I bet I can guess and I bet NY and Vermont are involved.

It's plainly unconstitutional.

LESS than 1.6 gl/flush? So many of the low-flow toilets now need to be flushed 2-3 times to, er, finish the job. I had a feeling this was going to be next, knowing how so many extreme environmental wackos think that the flush toilet is the bane of modern existence. Remember reading about the "dry composting toilet" conferences? That'll be next, requiring "dry toilets" in homes. Less than 1.6 gallons/flush is getting there.

Agreed, completely. California is Paradise Lost, which can never be reclaimed.

It amazes me how there are conservative Californians who believe otherwise, believing against reality, hoping against all hope.

There was a time in this nation's history when we fought a bloody civil war to keep some states from seceding. But I predict that the time will come when California makes noises about breaking away from the rest of Union, and that - when it happens - the _rest_ of the country will be actually relieved to "let California go".

Arnold may indeed be the LAST "Republican" governor that California ever has.

Just to show you that the waterless urinals article from Contractor's magazine was NOT a joke, here is another article on the same subject from the Army Times:

Waste not: Waterless urinals are on the way

http://www.armytimes.com/story.php?f=1-292925-2049058.php

Waterless urinals are the wave of the future, and in the Defense Department, the Army is leading the way.

Senate appropriators lauded the Army for a policy issued this summer requiring the use of “nonwater-using urinals.”

====

I think Senators and Congress in general have too much time on their hands. They avoid the issues they should be working on, like reforming social security, and spend their time specifying waterless urinals.

Pretty soon we'll all be going back to outhouses.

Not necessarily outhouse, but the composting toilets I've read about. They're indoors. And I don't want one.

Please... you just ruined my breakfast.

Water is a renewable resource, and for the government to tell us how much water we can use for showering and for one flush is insanity and the worst intrusion into our privacy, yet people just don't seem to be upset enough over it.

I bet if someone would do a study, they would find that people are NOT using any less water since the introduction of the "water saving" showerheads and toilets, you juat have to shower longer, flush more times and call the plumber more often.

The bill (AB 2948) does not specify. Here are the instigators: http://www.nationalpopularvote.com

The Dem Legislature churned out hundreds of bills just before the election.

Fortunatly Arnold is vetoing the worst ones, like universal healthcare and drivers licenses for illegals and a few others.
