The Coast Guard wants to do target practice, with live ammunition, on all five of the Great Lakes.
Chief Petty Officer Robert Lanier, of the U.S. Coast Guard Ninth District, said the proposed target ranges would allow Coast Guard units to perform homeland defense exercises by firing at floating targets from cutters and small boats.
Lanier said the Coast Guard has to be ready for anything.
There would be specific times announced for the practice and boaters would be kept out of those areas.
The proposal has many people concerned. Hugh McDiarmid Junior from the Michigan Environmental Council says so far the Coast Guard has not responded to the Council's request for public hearings and environmental studies. But, the Coast Guard is not required to hold public hearings because it is part of the Homeland Security Department.

Great lakes whales??? What do Canadian women have to do with this????
Oh my Gwad!! I hope I don't live within 500m of your computer!
Actually they don't allow Canadian women to swim in the Great Lakes. It leaves rings around the piers in Chicago.
Change that to 1000m! DUCK!
By a treaty entered into after the War of 1812, neither Canada nor the US can have "warships" on the Lakes. This CG target-practice thing may sound trivial, but you can bet that permission to schedule it had to be obtained at the Highest Levels on both sides of the border.
During WW2, 48 submarines were built on Lake Michigan.
The story of how they were brought to the ocean is quite interesting. If you are interested, I'll find the link.
DU was whinning over the LEAD that would kill the environment and the depleted uranium. They are stupid.

No warships on the Great Lakes? One of the ships I was on in the Navy, a guided missile destroyer, DDG-12, was built at Bay City, Michigan. We took it through the Great Lakes and commissioned it in Boston.
But that may not have been a threat to the US/Canada treaty, being as how it was not commissioned yet.
Can we suggest targets for the exercise?
