A coalition of 300 Iraqi tribal leaders on Saturday demanded the release of Saddam Hussein so he could reclaim the presidency and also called for armed resistance against U.S.-led forces.
The clan chieftains, who were mostly Sunni Arabs and included the head of the 1.5 million-member al-Obeidi tribe, said they planned to hold rallies in Sunni cities throughout the country to insist that Hussein be freed and that the charges against him and his co-defendants dropped.
Hussein is being tried on charges of genocide and other alleged crimes arising from the Iraqi government's killing and forced relocation of ethnic Kurds in 1988, and he is awaiting a verdict in a trial that concluded in late July in the mass killings of Shiites after an assassination attempt against him in 1982.
During Hussein's dictatorship, positions of power in the military and the ruling Baath Party were held overwhelmingly by Sunni Arabs, a minority that formed the backbone of the Iraqi insurgency after Hussein was toppled in 2003.
"If the demand is not carried out, we will lead a general, sweeping and popular uprising," said Sheik Wassfy al-Assy, brother of the chief of the Obeidi tribe, which hosted a meeting of the clan leaders on Monday in Ramal, a village 55 miles southwest of Kirkuk. "As for whether [Hussein] will be reinstated in his post as president after his release, that will be up to him."

Find out where their meeting is going to be, and test out some new bombs.
Why test a new one -- just see if multiple MOABs result in fratricide.
they are getting feisty now that the Americans are disarming Sadr's Iranian backed militia...
I'd say go ahead and release him. A bullet to the brain base should do the trick.
It's time to declare open season on Sunni's.
Another reason Saddam should have been hung within a few months of his capture -- we have been way too lax at allowing Baathists incentives and opportunities to reorganize. All of the leading Saddamites should have been dead long ago.
Mr Rummy--
Where are the B52s?
Why do we continue to play patty-cake in Iraq?
How many more times should we sternly accuse Iran and Syria of meddling--with absolutely no consequence?
When do you intend to definitely defeat our enemies to the extent that they are convinced of their own defeat?
Do you think any peace can be attained via some other fashion?
Conduct war with maximum violence and speed, or get out of the way, sir.
The Iraqis need to finish trying Saddam and hang him high. Soon.
why is this guy still alive?
It's too bad these 300 moronic "leaders" didn't form their "coalition" to fight the foreign "insurgents" and "reclaim" their own country from them.
How about we put Fat-boy Sadr and Saddam in a round of celebrity death match... and then kill the winner.
TARGET: Sunni Chieftans
They should be rounded up and join Hussein on the gallows.
Wait a minute. We cannot kill these people. They are innocent civilians.
Let us remember there are soldiers and marines held for trial under threat of a death sentence for "murdering" innocent Iraqies.
What would the lawyers say and do if we were to wipe out whole cities, like we should?
AMEN!!
We have talked big about being serious about this war, but sadly our actions have not backed it up. We have been pussyfooting around Syria and Iran when everyone in the world knows that they are what is driving the insurgency. Yet we have allowed this to continue unabated and our troops are paying the price. You either go into a war all out or don't fight at all.
I see you are speechless as well. It appears the Sunnis have monitored the code pinko/ANSWER/commie cabal closely. I wonder if any of these "leaders" attended the meetings with the anti-American Americans 2 weeks ago for instruction?
