WASHINGTON
"President Likens Dewey to Hitler as Fascist Tool."
So ran The New York Times headline on Oct. 26, 1948, after what Dewey biographer Richard Norton Smith called a "particularly vitriolic attack in Chicago" by Harry Truman.
What brings this to mind is President Bush's assertion that we are "at war with Islamic fascism" and "Islamofascism."
After the transatlantic bomb plot was smashed, Bush said the plotters "try to spread their jihadist message I call -- it's totalitarian in nature, Islamic radicalism -- Islamic fascism. They try to spread it, as well, by taking the attack to those of us who love freedom."
What is wrong with the term Islamofascism?
First, there is no consensus as to what "fascism" even means.
As a concept, writes Arnold Beichman of the Hoover Institution, "fascism ... has no intellectual basis at all nor did its founders even pretend to have any. Hitler's ravings in 'Mein Kampf' ... Mussolini's boastful balcony speeches, all of these can be described, in the words of Roger Scruton, as an 'amalgam of disparate conceptions."'
Since the 1930s, "fascist" has been a term of hate and abuse used by the Left against the Right, as in the Harry Truman campaign.
Unsurprisingly, it is neoconservatives, whose roots are in the Trotskyist-Social Democratic Left, who are promoting use of the term. Their goal is to have Bush stuff al-Qaida, Hamas, Hezbollah, Syria and Iran into the same "Islamofascist" kill box.

islamic jihadist murdering fascists, poor misunderstood victims.
Christian/Catholic immigrant hispanics picking food and building shelter, scum of the Earth and the death of America.
Buchanan has allowed his anti-semitism to overcome his common sense.
In my opinion, the term "neoconservative" is as nebulous as "fascist" if not more so. And Buchanan, in matter-of-factly asserting that neoconservatives' "roots are in the Trotskyist-Social Democratic Left," does nothing to make this any clearer.
AKA "No one who hates Jews can be all bad". Why do I punish myself by reading Buchannan's columns -- My masochistic impulses I guess.
The sick decaying mind is once again blithering, and once again I will not read his total rant because he all to soon shows his ignorant 'look at me I matter' ways.
Pat's converted to Islam, with the rest of the left.
We might have seen this article yesterday. Fascism is a tough term to pin down. It seems to still be in the process of definition. Buchanan appears to be seeing fascism as it appears from outside, as it interacts with other systems. Maybe it is essential for survival of fascism to attempt to encompass neighboring states if they are not fascist. If so that would be a fatal weakness.
And how does pat buchanan shield that circuit and still make a living selling books? By bashing his fellow Catholic/Christians for the crime of crossing the border to pick food, build shelter, or clean toilets.
Ram jets into buildings and that ilk of islamisim are poor misunderstood victims according to pat buchanan.
Well do they not belong in that box? Me thinks so.
I clicked through and read the whole rant. Not surprisingly, Pat is sticking up for the Islamofascists and bashing Bush.
He is such a tired old refrain.
hey roses of sharon ,...
.. .. perhaps I should send a tinfoil kufi to Ol' Pat , they work for me!!
... poor Ol' Pat , chasing his tail again
Enquiring minds want to know: Just how much is Pat getting each month from the $2 billion Yasser Arafat KleptoFund?
I know. Pat lost me several years ago. He used to come up here and ride dogsleds right behind the house, but his health ended that. He was a lot more focused then and had a wider circumspection. It is like he is running on the remnants of his intellect which appear to be of a fascist nature. He is bright still, but he used to be brilliant.
What common sense? I have never known him to have any. He is a raving left-wing socialist, theocratic wolf in conservative's sheep's clothing.
Fascism is the rule of one bound to many for example a dictatorship of any political philosophy.
Islam is a social order where many are bound to one.
Islam is fascism. It's that simple.
Pat shilling for the antisemitic beheaders yet again. The only time I want to read anymore if his pro-terrorist drivel is after he spends a few month in Somali "enjoying" the new world order of the Sharia law courts. Then maybe he will be less picky about knowing the meaning of "Isalamofacisism".
A neo-conservative is a conservative Jew promoting pro-Isreali policy in the US.
I know facism when I see it and there is a lot of it going around the world these days.
