France leads rebuke of Iran

By Harry Mount in New York

(Filed: 02/09/2006)

France led the international condemnation of Iran's nuclear ambitions yesterday, giving the clearest indication to date that it could side with an American push to impose sanctions.

The French prime minister, Dominique de Villepin, went further than ever before in his criticism of Iran's refusal to suspend its nuclear programme, though he said he still hoped for a negotiated solution to the row.

"We cannot accept that Iran should be able to resume its activities in the nuclear field," said Mr de Villepin. "The door must always remain open to dialogue, but the international community cannot accept that undertakings given are not respected."

Iran faces UN Security Council sanctions if it refuses to stop its nuclear activities when the five permanent members of the Council — America, Britain, France, China and Russia — meet in Berlin next week.

Earlier this week, the International Atomic Energy Agency declared that Teheran had refused to halt its nuclear programme by the Aug 31 deadline. The West accuses Iran of planning to build nuclear weapons, but Iran says its nuclear programme is for producing electricity.

Hmmm, is that the same France that so desparately wanted a ceasefire between Israel and Hezbollah that they promised to man a buffer zone force between them?

France is talking out it's a-- again. Disregard.

I hadn't actually noticed any chorus of international condemnation myself. I did see Russia and China threaten to block any Security Council resolution, though.

What does de Villepin expect to accomplish with negotiations now that the "deadline" has passed? Set another deadline? Threaten Ahmadinejad with 200 French troops?

The French are unhappy with the level of Iranian graft comming their way, and are grinding them for more.

France and Iran are geographical neighbors and potentially huge trading partners. This is nothing to sneeze at. They could have said they don't back sanctions and left the rest of the of us in the cold.

IMHO, Europe has caught on to the real scope of the threat. Better late than never.

"Nothing like the smell of a thousand burning cars to wake you up."

Truth is..it was more than just cars. There were some churches as well but that was conveniently "censored".

The problem with censorship is that it takes longer for word of mouth, but the truth eventually gets out.
