During the course of a conversation with former Deputy Defense Secretary Jed Babbin on this afternoon's show, Tucker Carlson described himself as "a real conservative."
But it was just a few minutes earlier, chatting with New Republic editor-at-large Peter Beinart, that Carlson mentioned in passing that he hadn't supported President Bush for president in 2004.
When Carlson stated that he had been wrong to support the war in Iraq [and now opposes it], Beinart retorted:
"You've just made a statement which almost guarantees that you're going to have to support the Democratic candidate in 2008 because there's virtually no chance we're going to have a Republican candidate who says they were wrong to support the war in Iraq. So I congratulate you on flipping over to the other side."
Replied Carlson: "Well I doubt I'm going to support the Democratic candidate. Whether I'll support the Republican candidate is a whole separate question. I didn't last time, I may not this time."
Carlson is also on record as condemning Israel's recent attack on Hezbollah.
It's obviously possible to be a conservative without supporting George W. Bush. Conservatives rightly hold Bush's profligate spending against him, for starters. But since Carlson has told us whom he didn't vote for in 2004, perhaps he'd be willing to reveal whom he did support.
In any case, Carlson is clearly the kind of conservative MSNBC could love - one who doesn't support the incumbent Republican president and opposes the cornerstone of his foreign policy. It's the same phenomenon that explains Pat Buchanan's ubiquity on MSNBC.
Peach:
You are right. We need to fight all across the board. One issue voters mean that they will vote against someone who would put the people they support in the majority.
This is extremely near-sighted on their part.
"Ally with those you must!"
The Donner Party republicans
The Unappeasable Republicans.
The POS republicans....they suffer from Perpetually Offended Syndrome.
Hard to take on some days.
You know there is a difference between a "conservative" and a "republican". Bush has failed miserably on more than just one issue. Appears to me that the real phonies here are the ones that will compromise their principle over party.
I'm one of those people that did not vote for Bush in 2004. Yes, immigration was one issue I have with Bush but others include the expansion of the Medicare program, the Kennedy Education program (aka NCLB) and massive pork spending.
Yes, I'm a conservative. I believe that if you forgo your principles and vote strictly for the party you have wasted your vote.
MSNBC- the network people talk about but nobody watches.

Tucker is a big time McCain fan, he probably voted for him as a write-in candidate.
Do you ever get the feeling that if you stuck Tucker Carlson with a pin he'd pop?
But this does not matter to MSNBC's lovely small audience of libs.
Very well said, Peach. I couldn't agree more. Single issue voters may very well be the downfall of our GOP.
Oh my word!!!!
That kid isn't a conservative!
He may not even know what one is!
Sad to say, that's how it is in D.C. and I am proud of this President for being able to withstand the day in and day out assault on his honor and integrity by those who have never been elected to anything and know only how to tear down and never offer better solutions.
In fact, that's his next show on MSNBC. "Dancing with a real conservative who's a star for the 5 people who watch his show while drunk."
I did read Tucker was going to be on 'Dancing with the Stars'....so is Jerry Springer...
I think I'll watch...wonder how long before he is voted off?? Hope Springer is off first.
Perpetually Offended!
Tucker Carlson a conservative!!!! In related news Liberachi was straight.
Tucker Carlson is not a conservative but he plays one on TV.
MSNBC won't tolerate a "real conservative." Michael Savage lasted there about 5 minutes. I have an acquaintance who thinks Don Imus is still a conservative Republican but that he is playing some clever schtict on his show. Imus is about money and he does what he is told to do by MSNBC producers. Same with Scarborough and Carlson--they are media whores.
