ALBANY - Sen. Hillary Rodham Clinton said yesterday she hopes America is ready for a female president - and gave her strongest hint yet at whom she has in mind when she blurted out, “Stay tuned.” Clinton, who was on a three-day upstate New York campaign swing, made the provocative comment to ABC's "Nightline," which reaches a national audience.
Asked if America is ready for its first female chief executive, Clinton responded, "It just depends on when and if that happens. Stay tuned."
Her coy remark immediately renewed speculation that the former first lady, heading to an easy re-election victory in November, will do what polls show Democrats want: become their standard-bearer for president in 2008.
" 'Stay tuned' is quite a bit further along than Hillary has been up to this point," said Marist College polling director Lee Miringoff.
" 'Stay tuned' is, in fact, close to a hint at a coming attraction that may be happening right around the corner."
Republican political consultant Brendan Quinn said, " 'Stay tuned' sounds like Mrs. Clinton is looking past her Senate race this year and is already running for president."
Clinton's comments created enough of a storm that her husband made a surprise late appearance with her to try to tamp down the flames.
"She hasn't made up her mind [about a run in 2008] and I know that's the truth," said the former president, adding his wife was doing the right thing by focusing on her re-election race.
The Clintons appeared at a farm outside of upstate Cazenovia.

I, for one, cannot wait. The spectacle of the Mainstream Media (to the sound of fanfare being blown out of their oversized horns) tossing rose petals and bowing and scraping before the Lady Macbeth of Chappaqua is not to be missed. It may well be their final embarrassment before descending into meaninglessness. I will also enjoy inevitable foaming, gnashing of teeth, and other mad-dog symptomology amongst the Democrat Nut-Root activists, who mean to agitate for a Cromwell, rather than for a Queen. In the dark shadows of the Castle Kos, Sir Howie of Vermont will plot a coup, the only serious questions being who will be annointed as assassin, and will he succeed?
On the other side of the house will be the feckless, but generally sane Republicans, who will offer up someone, probably a current Governor of middling reputation, but one who will appear generally serious about threats from abroad and economic affairs at home. Not a Great Leader, perhaps, but a good person and plain speaker. The people will then be invited to choose between a soap opera and a soapbox standard-bearer. I’m betting that adults will choose wisely.
