Most Americans Agree with Evolution [new poll]
Angus Reid Consultants ^ | 01 September 2006 | Staff

Posted on 08/31/2006 7:42:01 PM PDT by PatrickHenry

More adults in the United States believe the theory of evolution is correct, according to a poll by the Pew Research Center for the People and the Press. 51 per cent of respondents think that humans and other living things evolved over time, while 42 per cent say they existed in their present form since the beginning of time.

Charles Darwin’s "The Origin of Species" was first published in 1859. The book details the British naturalist’s theory that all organisms gradually evolve through the process of natural selection. Darwin’s views were antagonistic to creationism, the belief that a more powerful being or a deity created life.

In the United States, the debate on the topic accelerated after the 1925 Scopes trial, which tested a law that banned the teaching of evolution in Tennessee public schools. In 2004, Georgia’s Cobb County was at the centre of a controversy on whether science textbooks that explain evolutionary theory should include disclaimer stickers.

The theory of intelligent design suggests certain biological mechanisms are too complex to have developed without the involvement of a powerful force or intelligent being.

Last month, Austrian cardinal Christoph Schoenborn said the two views are not necessarily incompatible, declaring, "There is no conflict between science and religion, but a debate between a materialist interpretation of the results of science and a metaphysical philosophical interpretation. (...) The possibility that the Creator used evolution as a tool is completely acceptable for the Catholic faith."

Are you color blind?

No - are you dyslexic?

You told me to refer to your post #295. There was nothing about "daughters of men" in it.

However there WAS in your post #285.

However there WAS in your post #285.

You are right!

Glad you finally found it (even with my mis-direction)

Did it answer your question?

Did it answer your question?

No it didn't. According to Genesis Adam & Eve were the only 2 people on Earth. They had 2 sons. One son killed the other then went off and married ??????who????? and where did she come from?

And I still don't understand just who were the "sons of God" that married the "daughters of men"?

For the time will come when men will not put up with sound doctrine. Instead, to suit their own desires, they will gather around them a great number of teachers to say what their itching ears want to hear.

That describes the Creationists to a "T".

They won't listen to "sound doctrine" and they only believe what "their itching ears want to hear."

Quoting the Bible can be a double-edged sword.

"'Cause it's inaccurate. You'd have to show, from the Scriptures, thar Eve KNEW all these things."

Its hard to debate a literalist. And I understand and respect your belief.

Eve was told by God not to do something.
Satan told her to do it, because she could be like God.
Eve, desiring to experience something she was told not to, is a product of narcissism, greed, depravity(experiencing an action for pure desire) and materialism. And then she was later ashamed because she pulled Adam into it and they both had guilt.
Then God said, Okay, if you guys want to engage in these activities, then you reap what you sow. Eve, you are going to become pregnant, and it is going to hurt. Adam, instead of lying around and eating fruit, you gotta work for a living and care for your kids.

Its not that hard. But we are getting off point.
The question is, do you believe human life on earth is only four thousand years? Do you believe the earth is only four thousand years? If so to both, then our exchange is concluded because I've heard the literalist point of view.
Sorry if can't open your mind to other possibilities.
One last question, did gamma rays exist before man discover them? Or did they only exist when man was able to measure them?
As for backing things up by Scripture, this is nice, but even the apostles acknowledged that certain actions and teachings by Jesus were not all written in the bible because "John 21:25 Jesus did many other things as well. If every one of them were written down, I suppose that even the whole world would not have room for the books that would be written."

So because these "many other things" were not included, it is your view that they are not as important? But these "many other things" happended because scripture says it through John, right? Do you discount this? How do you know that Jesus did not sit down with John and say, You know John, My Father created the earth millions of years ago, but he decided that Adam was the beginning of his chosen people." You don't know because you don't have a book of the "many other things." Be a little more open minded. I'm not trying to shake faith, but just trying to show that a form of evolution was utilized by God to create the earth. What is so scary about that?
good night.

Then, what remains is belief, and that is what sets the two groups apart. One content in the spiritual, and the other using the argument as a means to control.

Belief equals faith. There are two sides: 1) if man can't determine why something happens, and he is spiritual, then he had faith in God making it happen. 2) if man can't determine why something happends, and he is a pure scientist, then he lacks funding, and leaves research.

:I'm not aware of any "serious" attempts to draw up a curriculum"

'Serious' huh. By 'curriculum' do you mean schedule of courses, or subject matter content? Curriculum usually means the whole bag. The courses offered by a university, a college, a department, a school, or perhaps the courses composing a particular discipline. It's been a while, and I know usage varies from region to region, over time. So, you tell me. But, thanks anyway for confirming my impression.

However you are using the term (and you can tell me or not as it pleases you), 'curriculum' or subject matter is just one of several issues, in my opinion.

There is also the question of teacher certification, usually by both the relevent university or college graduating the teacher, and by the Ed Dpt of the state in which the teacher will instruct.

Then there is also the issue of accreditation, which is the responsibility of the regional accreditation associations, with state education department participation.

So. There is subject matter, there is certification, and there is accreditation. Whenever I hear someone argue the DI side of this question and they fail to make these three issues the mainstay of their argument, then I know they are not serious about the subject.

Just so I don't get flamed by everyone, I should mention I recognize that some argue ID, not DI. These people are dealing with a serious philosophical issue, and they deserve respect.

"teach the controversy"

I don't know how you're going to 'teach the controversy' if you don't have a reasonable command of the subject matter, and I don't think there are very many who would be both qualified and willing to teach a high school course in ID. For that matter, I doubt very many high school students could qualify to take such a course. Too much math, physics, and science would be required.

Teach the controversy? It's more like argue the controversy. Anyone can do that, and everyone who does seems to be having a good time. { 8^)

Eve was told by God not to do something.

No; she wasn't.

ADAM was told.

Eve had not been CREATED yet.

I am a literalist - if the definition is someone who can read what the text says: not inserting my own ideas into the areas where it doesn't speak.

"No; she wasn't. ADAM was told. Eve had not been CREATED yet."

What, splitting hairs? ha ha:

"2 The woman said to the serpent, "We may eat fruit from the trees in the garden, 3 BUT GOD DID SAY, 'You must not eat fruit from the tree that is in the middle of the garden, and you must not touch it, or you will die.'"

How do you know that God didn't sit Eve down and say some time after she 'popped up' and say "Now look Eve, I've already told Adam, so now I'm going to tell you. (pointing with finger) Don't eat from that tree. Got it!"

If Eve HAD heard directly from GOD, I doubt that the Serpent would have been able to DECEIVE her.

She must have heard it from ADAM; who may have added the 'touch it part'. (He WAS made first! ;^)
