JOHN Howard has singled out Muslim migrants for refusing to embrace Australian values and urged them to fully integrate by treating women as equals and learning to speak English.
The call for a shift in attitude among some Muslims infuriated community leaders last night, and comes as The Australian can reveal the Prime Minister's own Islamic advisers have already accused Mr Howard and senior ministers of fuelling hatred and mistrust by using "inflammatory and derogatory" language.
Mr Howard said: "There is a section, a small section of the Islamic population, and I say a small section ... which is very resistant to integration.
"Fully integrating means accepting Australian values, it means learning as rapidly as you can the English language if you don't already speak it," the Prime Minister said during a radio talkback discussion.
"And it means understanding that in certain areas, such as the equality of men and women ... people who come from societies where women are treated in an inferior fashion have got to learn very quickly that that is not the case in Australia."
The comments prompted a fierce reaction from young female Islamic leader Iktimal Hage-Ali, a member of the Prime Minister's advisory group. She accused Mr Howard of threatening to further marginalise Muslims. "There's no value in pointing out the minority of the Muslim group," she said.

Is this a surprise? Islamics never had any intention of integrating into Western culture, and they never will. Best just to not let them in in the first place.
A quote from Omar Ahmad, Co-founder CAIR:
"If you choose to live here [in America], you have a responsibility to deliver the message of Islam ... Islam isn't in America to be equal to any other faiths, but to become dominant. The Koran, the Muslim book of scripture, should be the highest authority in America, and Islam the only accepted religion on Earth."
And CAIR is a (supposedly) moderate group. Time for the West to wake up. ....long past time.
I'm thinking Australia might make a nice home also.
Kind of like Californians.
*ducks*
(I can say that...I'm a refugee from Calif.)
I know what your mean.
And in my case, there are regrets: if Aussie mortgage rates in the mid-'80's handn't been astronomical I'd probably be there now. (I had a possiblility of a post at Macquarie which I didn't pursue because we came to the conclusion that with two kids and a third on the way, the only place we could afford to buy a home in the Sydney metro area was Emu Plains!)
Why are our politicians so afraid of Muslims? I wish the citizens of the US would read this article to see what we are fighting.
It isn't fear, it is money.
The muslim community is its own worst enemy. They apparently haven't heard the old Western adage, "no one likes to be accused, but the guilty squeal the loudest."
"Kind of like Californians."
That is the truth!
I think American muslims give the appearance of being more assimilated than those in the U.K., Europe, and Oz.
"What do we call all the muslims I see walking into the
nudy bar? Non-assimlating, false god, hypocrites?"
Maybe we could call them "future terrorists". The 9-11 guys spent the night of Sept. 10 in strip clubs. So, yes, I guess you COULD call them hypocrites.
Actually, I think Bush has already said this.
Because the liberal media only sees what it wants to see, and only reports what it wants to report.
If they don't, escort them down to the docks for a free ride home.
"Might we borrow your Prime Minister sometime?"
bags us in the UK first - as we have the same head of state and all that...
"Prime Minister Howard "gets it."
"Islamic advisers have already accused Mr Howard and senior ministers of fuelling hatred and mistrust by using "inflammatory and derogatory" language"
Isn't it the "Islamic advisers" who do that fuelling hatred and mistrust sort of thing?
(She accused Mr Howard of threatening to further marginalise Muslims.)
How is encouraging them to integrate marginalizing them?
