Centrist Democrats betray principles with rote attacks on Wal-Mart(Hillary Clinton sat on board)
Pioneer Press ^ | Thu, Aug. 31, 2006 | Sebastian Mallaby

Once upon a time, smart Democrats defended globalization, open trade and the companies that thrive within this system. They were wary of tethering themselves to an anti-trade labor movement that represents a dwindling fraction of the electorate. They understood the danger in bashing corporations: Voters don't hate corporations, because many of them work for one..............................

To see the difference between then and now, just look at the Clintons. In the late 1980s and early 1990s, Hillary Clinton sat on Wal-Mart's board; and when Sam Walton died in 1992, Bill Clinton lauded him as "a wonderful family man and one of the greatest citizens in the history of the state of Arkansas." Campaigning in the New Hampshire primary that year, Bill Clinton came proudly to the rescue of a local company called American Brush Co. by helping it become a Wal-Mart supplier.

Times change. Last year Hillary Clinton returned a campaign contribution from Wal-Mart, even though she had no compunction in banking a check from Jerry Springer. The nation's most successful retailer, which has seized the opportunities created by globalization to boost the buying power of ordinary Americans, is now seen as too toxic to touch. But a trash-talking TV host is acceptable.

Clinton is not alone in this. The stiff-necked Joe Lieberman, who holds fast to his principles on the Iraq war, recently abandoned his centrist economic credentials by appearing at an anti-Wal-Mart rally. No matter that Lieberman once served as chairman of the business-friendly Democratic Leadership Council. Now he proclaims his determination "to wake up Wal-Mart and say, 'Treat your workers fairly.' "

Hillary returned a Walmart contribution - she hates Walmart. Hillary is NOT a conservative - she is NOT of the people. This smacks of democrat ad banner...

I am not sure I'd say they are "betraying" their principles. Seems like they are vindicating their principles more than betraying them.

More people shopped at Walmart last year than voted in 2004. Dems are going after that vote.

The Dems don't like Wal-Mart because Wal-Mart is viewed as an alternative to government.

Walmart seems to being hit from both sides of the political spectrum. Yesterday, there was a long thread about them, complaining that Wallyworld had made some sort of an agreement with a GLBT organization.

Oddly enough, though, Walmart just seems to keep going, and going, and going.

If Hillary = "Centrist", then who, for example, is in left field?

Let 'em attack Wal-Mart. Walmart is not the company they used to be when Sam Walton ran the show. Let the left devour them. I'll just watch the show. Yaaawwwwn.

Lesson: Your principles are only as firmly rooted as you see them reflected in your own children.

I hate to keep posting this, whenever I hear about the Democrats and Wal-Mart, as it smacks of spamming - but it does bear repeating (and would make a perfect t-shirt or bumper sticker): "only a jackass would rail against Wal-Mart, and then ask for the votes of its customers."

They are not after the customer's votes. They are after the worker's votes, and those of Wal-Mart's competitors.

The interesting thing is that Hillary would send back money. Apparently, she thinks the unions who are fighting Wal-Mart are of greater value to her than Wal-Mart campaign contributions.

It is just a power play. She doesn't hate Wal-Mart. She just wants to control them. The drama is working too. The left is getting Wal-Mart's full support for their perversity-diversity agenda.

Big deal if liberals are on the board. What matters is policy. Wal-Mart has been caving in on policy thinking it will buy them favor. Ah, but like appeasement always does, it just emboldens the opposition.

Wal-Mart's family friendly core is dead. The body is still being propped up for the sake of tradition, but the decay is starting to smell really bad.

I'm rooting for the left on this one. Eat 'em up.

Does Wal Mart train its employees how to get public assistance like the left protrays?

I am going to steal that for my Sunday School lesson this week. Although it is not always true, that is the case more often than we are willing to admit. That is definitely "a keeper." Thank you.
