Attorney General Charlie Crist's formidable lead over Chief Financial Officer Tom Gallagher in the Republican primary for governor appears secure, according to a poll released Wednesday by Quinnipiac University, but with less than a week to go before Tuesday's election, the race between the leading Democrats is still up for grabs.
Crist is ahead of Gallagher 57 to 32 percent, according to the Connecticut-based public opinion research group.
But the poll says the contest between U.S. Rep. Jim Davis and state Sen. Rod Smith is much tighter, with Davis leading 43-32 percent, while a substantial 24 percent of Democrats surveyed are still undecided. Among Republican voters, 12 percent say they have not made up their minds.
''The thing about undecideds is many of them often don't vote,'' said Peter Brown, assistant director of the Quinnipiac University Polling Institute, adding that many Democrats have ''not been inspired'' by the Democratic candidates this year.
The poll showed that Crist's lead includes voters who identify themselves as ''born-again or evangelical Christians.'' Among Republicans, 45 percent describe themselves within that conservative subset, and among those voters, Crist leads Gallagher 53 to 38 percent, although that sample has a margin of error of 8.7 percentage points.
The university surveyed likely primary voters in Florida Aug. 23-28, including 317 Republicans and 312 Democrats. Because of the small sample, the poll had a margin of error of 5.5 percentage points.

I have seen Tom respond with class under pressure. What exactly is obnoxious? The part that questions Crist's attempts to hijack JEB's legacy?

I can't apologize for the fact that it is a large state, and the paid media must be used to get our message out. But Charlie uses the same techniques. Could you please comment on the substance? If commercials offend your sensibilities, have you ever attended a candidates forum, Tom is very accessible, and always take questions from the floor, on the record. Charlie does not. Tom will walk a parade, and shake every hand, Charlie rides in the back seat of a convertible and waves. Character is not just what you see on the surface, and what you suspect. I have personally found out, and I know.

The university surveyed likely primary voters in Florida Aug. 23-28, including 317 Republicans and 312 Democrats. Wow, a whopping 629 votes.
I suppose that you could better determine a number to sample which would have been cost effective and given a significantly smaller margin of error?
To: darkangel82
The polls in 04 showed Kerry ahead, too.
Actualy, they showed Kerry with lead within the margin of error.

So you support the Senate immigration bill,
Crist isn't running for the Senate. He is running for governor.
To: Happy Valley Dude
And your point is? Happy Valley Dude supports the Senate immigration bill, or Charlie Crist's administration of immigration law will be the enforcement of the current bill, Simpson-Mazoli? Charlie as AG has lots of chances to work with the Feds to enforce current law. Yet he does not. Maybe Happy Valley Dude supports the status quo.

Strategic Vision Poll
If the election for the Republican nomination for Governor in 2006 were held today between Attorney General Charlie Crist and Chief Financial Officer Tom Gallagher, whom would you vote for? (Republicans only)
Charlie Crist 52%
Tom Gallagher 36%
Undecided 12%
Strategic Vision Poll
The Strategic Vision poll is based on telephone interviews with 1,200 likely voters conducted Aug. 25 through Aug. 27, with a margin of sampling error of plus or minus 3 percentage points, according to David E. Johnson, president of Strategic Vision LLC, an Atlanta-based public relations and public affairs agency.

I just fail to see how this federal legislation is relevant to the race for Governor. Incidentally, Crist's position is the same as that liberal Jeb Bush.

As you said, Crist is running ads, too. They are tasteful. Gallagher's are harsh and loud, and he's responsible for that. Someone is lying.

funny you should mention "fruit" when you talk about Crist.

So I guess that you failed to avail yourself of the following due diligence, how Tom will work pro-actively to solve the immigration crisis. And I guess that you are happy with the status quo.
TALLAHASSEE A study by the non-partisan Congressional Budget Office has calculated that the Senate immigration bill, favored by Republican gubernatorial candidate Charlie Crist, would cost taxpayers as much as $126 billion over the next decade. (Washington Post, 8/22/06). Of that amount, $50 billion would go to immigrants who enter the country illegally for benefits such as tax credits, Medicaid, and social security.
Gallagher Outlines Steps To Fight Illegal Immigration
TALLAHASSEE Tom Gallagher, Floridas Chief Financial Officer and a candidate for the Republican nomination for Governor, today announced several initiatives relating to Floridas public safety.
Following a tour of the Port of Pensacola, Tom Gallagher held a press availability during which he pledged to create a Florida Office of Security and Preparedness, praised Governor Bush and the Florida Legislature for measures taken to strengthen Floridas port security, and outlined four steps that he would take to reduce illegal immigration.
"Illegal immigration threatens public safety and undermines respect for the rule of law, said Gallagher. While we must approach the issue of illegal immigration with compassion, Florida government must do its part to secure our borders and protect the public.
Gallagher proposed the following steps to fight illegal immigration in Florida:
1. Give Florida law enforcement officers the power to arrest and detain those who have violated federal immigration law. Florida law currently does not allow state and local law enforcement personnel to make warrantless arrests for violations of federal immigration law. This must be changed. State and local police should have the authority to address immigration violations that they come across in the course of their normal duties. For example, if a state or local policeman reasonably believes that a person has violated federal immigration law, Florida law should allow the officer to detain that person and give federal officials the opportunity to take him into custody.
To be clear, state and local law enforcement should not be required to enforce federal immigration lawwhether to do so involves their discretion and assessment of how best to use their resources. Nor should state and local officials seek to displace federal officials as the primary enforcers of immigration law. Rather, this proposal is based on the commonsense notion that state and local police should have the full legal authority they need to protect our people and to uphold the rule of law.
2. Expand Floridas anti-illegal immigration law enforcement partnership with the Department of Homeland Security. Since 2002, the Florida Department of Law Enforcement has participated in a program with the Department of Homeland Security that allows well-trained state and local law enforcement personnel to serve as immigration officers. Under this program, state and local law enforcement work in partnership with federal officials on immigration-related investigations. To date, the program has focused exclusively on immigration investigations that have a connection to domestic security and terrorism. A key success of the program was the March 2005 arrest of six illegal aliens who were performing contract maintenance work at the Crystal River Nuclear Power Plant. One of the workers had already been deported once and had re-entered the country illegally.
A Gallagher Administration would seek to expand this program to address aspects of illegal immigration that dont necessarily have a clear nexus with terrorism. For example, following the example of similar programs in Alabama and Arizona, Floridas program would be expanded to combat the use of fraudulent documents by those applying for drivers licenses and to verify the immigration status of those who are being processed into our state prisons and county jails.
3. No hiring of illegal aliens by those who contract with the government. Government needs to lead by example. It must not contribute to the problem of illegal immigration by hiring illegal immigrants or by contracting with those who do. State law should require that all public employers and all government contractors participate in the federal electronic work authorization program called Basic Pilot. Founded in 1996 and run by the Department of Homeland Security, that program enables employers to verify the employment eligibility of all job applicants.
4. Continue to work with our neighbors in Latin America and the Caribbean to encourage democracy and trade. One of the best things that can be done to stop illegal immigration into our state is to help our Caribbean and Latin American community strengthen their own economies. Through numerous trade missions and outreach, Governor Bush has taken a leadership role in promoting economic ties between Florida and her Latin American neighbors. A Gallagher Administration would build on these efforts and continue them into the future.

Are you happy with JEB's position? You support a candidate who espouses policies with which you disagree? Next you will tell me that you don't agree with the incremental homosexual agenda either. Are you just happy with Charlie, or is that a gun in your pocket?

I have yet to find a candidate who i agree with on 100% of the issues. Do you agree with Tom Gallagher that so-called assault weapons should be banned, that ammunition should be registered, and that those under 21 should not be able to purchase hand guns?
To: Happy Valley Dude
Tom took those positions twelve years ago in consultation with law enforcement to combat gang-bangers who were shooting up shopping malls. Those proposals have since been shelved and are not issues in this campaign. Tom IS championing your right to carry a gun in your car, without interference from your employer. Charlie IS NOT. If you want to fight last century's gun rights battles, be my guest, you will be also advancing the incremental gay agenda, and setting back property tax and insurance reform. On today's legislative docket, Charlie is not your friend. No matter how he smiles and glad hands at gun shows to make you happy.

So, now Mr. Gallagher no longer consults law enforcement? Maybe that's why the state troopers are backing Crist. But not for being a gun grabber. Crist is so pro-gun that the NRA has endorsed him.
To: Happy Valley Dude
So you are happy to see Charlie AND you have a gun in your pocket. Just as I thought. It is not my fault that the NRA has shot itself in the foot. You really have to answer the question, as to why the endorsement when Charlie is no help with pending gun rights legislation. Looks to me like somebody is falling down on the job over at the NRA. Won't be the first time. As to the law enforcement endorsements, Charlie has run cover for the corrupt corrections system. The prosecutions have been few, and the retirements many.
