Attorney General Charlie Crist's formidable lead over Chief Financial Officer Tom Gallagher in the Republican primary for governor appears secure, according to a poll released Wednesday by Quinnipiac University, but with less than a week to go before Tuesday's election, the race between the leading Democrats is still up for grabs.
Crist is ahead of Gallagher 57 to 32 percent, according to the Connecticut-based public opinion research group.
But the poll says the contest between U.S. Rep. Jim Davis and state Sen. Rod Smith is much tighter, with Davis leading 43-32 percent, while a substantial 24 percent of Democrats surveyed are still undecided. Among Republican voters, 12 percent say they have not made up their minds.
''The thing about undecideds is many of them often don't vote,'' said Peter Brown, assistant director of the Quinnipiac University Polling Institute, adding that many Democrats have ''not been inspired'' by the Democratic candidates this year.
The poll showed that Crist's lead includes voters who identify themselves as ''born-again or evangelical Christians.'' Among Republicans, 45 percent describe themselves within that conservative subset, and among those voters, Crist leads Gallagher 53 to 38 percent, although that sample has a margin of error of 8.7 percentage points.
The university surveyed likely primary voters in Florida Aug. 23-28, including 317 Republicans and 312 Democrats. Because of the small sample, the poll had a margin of error of 5.5 percentage points.
I know many here like Gallagher. I don't know either man, but I really don't like Gallagher's campaign. It is obnoxious and makes me wonder about his honesty.
Gallagher was even more disgusting when he ran against Jeb Bush for governor. He's like a "James Carville Wannabe".
1. Connecticut-based public opinion research group. okay.. i'll leave that alone....
2.includes voters who identify themselves as ''born-again or evangelical Christians.'' - How many of the 317 folks surveyed???
3. surveyed likely primary voters in Florida Aug. 23-28, including 317 Republicans
57% of 317 is what???
my 2cents worth on this thread... passing it on.. GO GALLAGHER !!
Guess Dobson's endorsement has not exactly borne much fruit.
BTTT
Either that or the survey managed to miss Dobson's vast audience, or was not able to find them at all (as is the case in with the broadcast ratings).
At 57% Crist, 32% Gallagher, one has to have really swallowed the Kool Aid to think Gallagher will win. Another three point slip would put Gallagher behind by a two-to-one margin.
Had Gallagher not run such a nasty campaign against Jeb Bush for governor (that people very well remember) he might not be in such a bad position. He got really trashy in the campaign....something his ardent followers choose to overlook. Way too much denial.
45% of the 317 surveyed described themselves as "evangelical" or "born again."
If you don't like the Qunnipiac poll because it is based out of Connecticut, then what do you think about the other two polls that came out this week? Strategic vision (a Republican polling firm) showed Crist up 16, and Mason-Dixon poll which came out today showing Crist up 22 points.
His advocates here have shown themselves to be fairly clueless all around.
More from Quinnipiac:
It will take a political storm a lot bigger than Ernesto to give Gallagher much chance to defeat Crist in the GOP primary, said Peter Brown, assistant director of the Quinnipiac University Polling Institute. It would be hard to think of a candidate who has blown that large a lead with so little time remaining until the actual voting.
Fifty-one percent have a favorable impression of Crist, compared to only 11 percent who view him unfavorably. By comparison, 32 percent view Gallagher favorably, with 17 percent unfavorable.
Only 18 percent of Crist voters, compared to 27 percent of Gallagher supporters, say they might change their mind before going to the polls Tuesday.
GO, GALLAGHER! This is the age of the internet and lots of people are not on line waiting for pollsters to call them.
That IS A FACTOR!
GO, GALLAGHER!

How many undecided voters vote for the candidate that is ahead in the "polls" 5 days before the election. My experience tells me that undecided voters do look at the endorsements.. and in this case, I think that favots Gallagher... IMHO
Tom Gallagher spoke out on Terri's behalf before Crist's friend Judge Greer and Judge Whittemore carried out the order to torture her until death.
They didn't call me, and I voted (absentee ballot) for Crist.
