Draw your own conclusions from the fact that Armitage’s best friend Colin Powell called Dick Cheney’s supporters (including Scooter Libby, Doug Feith and Paul Wolfowitz) the “Gestapo Office” (quite insulting considering that there is a history of relatives lost in the Holocaust among them).
Factor in that Powell called Doug Feith “a card-carrying member of the Likud Party” and referred to the Likudnicks in the White House controlling policy during his “exit interview with Bush” (see Assassin’s Gate: America in Iraq) – thereby showing his support for anti-Semitic conspiracy theorists.

I would like to ask you guys to please look at the title of he article that this thread is about.
It doesn't just say Plame..in fact, it doesn't say Plame at all..
"The Powell-Armitage-Wilkerson Cabal"...is the name of the article..and the article itself has several links....THAT is what this is about...all of the various and sundry people that have their hand in this "SCANDAL" that never was.
Also..none of the people we are discussing now is still with the Bush Administration...so he HAS cleaned house.

I understand. my point is, did they set this up? did they engineer the whole thing? did Armitage's "leaking" to Novak the reason why Wilson was chosen to go to Niger, a conscious trigger for the whole event?
to say that these forces exist inside State and CIA, is nothing new. we all know that. that's different then saying it was a conspiracy (we are talking about Powell/Armitage now, not Plame/Wilson/CIA/media) from the begininng.

I think PLAME, herself, is about the least important person in this whole scenario.

the administration gave up too fast on the Niger story - they gave up pushing the thesis that the forged documents were planted as a poison pill to discredit the whole story, the basic Niger story was true.

Since Powell and Armitage didn't have strong policy motivations, they turned everything into a personal turf war, which went a long way to embittering and making dysfunctional the first administration. Yes, Bush and Rice should have stopped it, but a lot of the blame goes to Powell and Armitage for engaging in this kind of bureaucratic tribal warfare in the first place. Of course, the story in the press was always that Powell and Co. were the embattled, innocent victims—but that was partly because they were feeding so many of the reporters. It's outrageous that because this small group was so adept at leaking and so adept at working the press that they managed to get the administration's "neo-cons" portrayed in the media as an out-of-control cabal. When these officials were just supporting the policy of the administration that Powell and Armitage and their small group of allies so disdained and did so much to undermine."

Make no mistake about this, Rove was not the target Bush was and this was nothing more than a coup attempt by the State Dept. Wilson must have had some conversations along the way with Powell/Armitage on the fake report to the NYT.
At the time this broke the entire Country was behind the war and Bush's strongest asset was his trust. This was a successful attack on that asset. How many times have we heard the words Niger/Yellowcake? Everybody knew this was a big lie.

Agreed, as long as you don't EVER AGAIN put him in charge of an intelligence op. Sorry. You may like Ollie. I do too. But he was a class "A" F-up re Iran Contra. He didn't just screw the pooch; he wined it, dined it, and took it on a three day weekend to Vegas. The security of the whole thing was laughably poor. It's a miracle the Soviets failed to detect the operation long before the press did. Even the purely Contra side of the operation, were Ollie generally tends to get the most credit, was a mess. It took Elliot Abrams months to straighten it out and get the Contras to where they were a sizable, popular and effective force. And of course Ollie shat on the principle of civilian control by leaving Abrams out of the loop, and making him take the heat before Congress.
Hmmm. Maybe I don't like Ollie too much. Or I should say I don't trust him for playing against his own team like he did wrt to Abrams. And although I didn't have a problem with Ollie misleading Congress (a choice he didn't give Abrams) I DID most definitely have a problem with his removing documents from a secure location, then ALTERING and returning them. That's literally Orwellian, and I continue to think Ollie should have served time for that, or at least been indicted and tried with maybe something less than jail time.
