REGINA — Prime Minister Stephen Harper has announced the federal government will increase funding to the RCMP over the next two years to pay for an additional 600 officers and 400 support personnel across the country.

Harper, who made the announcement at RCMP academy in Regina, said there will also be assistance in "sprucing up" training facilities.

Harper told an audience of RCMP recruits that as officers they will be icons and role models in Canadian society.

"Canada's new government is delivering on its commitment to make substantial investments in the future of the RCMP," Harper said.

He said in the 2006 budget, $161 million was allocated for the hiring of 1,000 more RCMP officers, staff and prosecutors.

Harper is on a cross-Canada trip Wednesday making funding announcements. He was expected to make a funding announcement for the 2010 Olympics later in the day in Vancouver.

Given that Stephen Harper's already kept more promises in under nine months than Brian Mulroney kept in over nine years, I can't imagine which PM's are still ahead of him beyond John A. MacDonald & conceivably Wilfred Laurier?

No question he's exceeded everyone's expectations. I'm betting that history will judge him the most visionary PM since Laurier.

I'm surprised the RCMP wanted such an announcement made with a barn in the background. ;^)

As the article states Harper made the announcement before an "audience of RCMP recruits", seemingly it's safe to conclude it occurred at the RCMP Training College located in Regina while the barn is located at the Country Club where he went afterward.

Just more evidence that the Liberals were right when they charged that if you elect Harper, the Canada that most of us have come to know (and endure) will be changed forever..
Damn those Conservatives.. ;)

I know - I was referencing this:

If you'll recall, the RCMP set fire to a barn in Quebec to frame the separatists in the '70s.

Good for Harper. He's terrific.

But what about the two Mounties who married each other? (two men).

Read about it on a thread here and then didn't hear any more about it.

If one were devious, one could say that the barn background was a swipe at separatists, terrorists and Liberals
A number of years ago, the RCMP's anti-terrorism unit waged a "dirty tricks" campaign to discredit Quebec separatists that included barn-burnings and the theft of Parti Québécois membership lists.
Those "crimes" led to the establishment of the McDonald Commission into RCMP wrongdoing. In the end, the Liberal dominated Parliament stripped the RCMP of responsibility for national security issues and created CSIS to handle them instead.

Maybe the barn in the ceremony has no significance, but then Harpers boys tend to have a good reason for everything they do..

The Mounties could start by protecting Parliament Hill from guys with canoes on their heads.

"But what about the two Mounties who married each other? (two men)."

While not denying this occurred, one difference between Canada & America is, with less than 1/10th of your population spread out over a much larger area, local news tends to become national news up here much more readily.

When outrageous stuff occurs in states like Massachusetts, it often doesn't gain national attention simply because your total news volume is so much greater.

Unfortunately, especially with our msm having a left-wing & promotion of the negative agenda similar to your own, many Americans get the erroneous impression that many things are considerably worse and/or radically different than they are Stateside.

IIRC they torched the barn to prevent a meeting of suspected FLQ terrorists.

IIRC that was the cover story. The Trudeau regime was pressuring them for results.
