LOS ANGELES
A Korean grocers' group sued former U.N. ambassador Andrew Young for libel for claiming that they and other market owners "ripped off" blacks.
The suit, filed last week in Los Angeles County Superior Court, also names the Wal-Mart store chain and seeks at least $7.5 million in damages.
The former Atlanta mayor resigned as head of a Wal-Mart advocacy group on Aug. 18 amid controversy over comments he made to the weekly, black-owned Los Angeles Sentinel.
In an interview, Young said that Wal-Mart competition had forced smaller, "mom-and-pop" stores out of his neighborhood.
"But you see, those are the people who have been overcharging us, selling us stale bread and bad meat and wilted vegetables," Young said. "And they sold out and moved to Florida. I think they've ripped off our communities enough. First it was Jews, then it was Koreans and now it's Arabs; very few black people own these stores."
He apologized later.
The libel suit was filed by the California Korean American Grocery Retailer Association.
"Most members are very upset," said Gene Park, the association's secretary and owner of a liquor store in Los Angeles. "There is no evidence that members sold those kinds of spoiled items. ... If people think we charge higher prices or sell bad food, they won't come in anymore."
"Until we can finish studying the complaint, it wouldn't be right to comment on it," Wal-Mart spokesman John Simley said.
Probably no truth to it ~ but almost all welfare "checks" all over the country have been on "direct deposit" for quite some time.
And George didn't even utter a cognizable "racial slur". On the other hand, he's the only one on your list with a Jewish mother, and that draws its own crowd.
You are correct. Here in Detroit the black community insists that the US government pays Arabs to come here and "take over" all the small businesses.
Here's the reality:
I know some Iraqi brothers (Chaldeans - Christians, not Moslems) who own a gas station on the east side of Detroit.
They got no government help to buy the gas station. Here's how they did it: Their uncle in Iraq cashed in his insurance policy to buy the 4 brothers airline tickets to Detroit.
When they got here they took a bus from the airport to Hammtramck and rented a sleeping room. Each of them got 2 full time minimum wage jobs (sweeping floors, washing dishes and the like). They lived in a single room for 2 years, only paying rent and buying beans and rice. They did not buy a car, they did not buy a TV, they literally saved almost every dime they made.
After two years of working 16 hours a day, living 4 to one room on beans and rice, they finally had saved enough money to make a down payment on a gas station.
Ten years later they each have a nice home, a nice car and live a decent life.
This option is open to ANYBODY in this country. Any of us can work hard, scrimp and save and go into business for ourselves.
How many of us are actually willing to do it?
It's easy to sit back and complain about "foreigners takeing over all our businesses". It's not so easy to go out and do it for yourself.
With all our problems - America is still the Land of Opportunity - for all.
Andrew Young is a pos, BUT he was 100% correct in his comment. In Chicago there has been numerous investigations over the years into exactly what Young said - and it was proved correct. Blacks WERE being ripped off by small grocery stores.
The last scam that I recall was that the grocers were messing with the scales. A person would order a pound of lunch meat and they'd get like 3/4 pound. And YES, the produce WAS stale as was the bread.
Young's ONLY mistake was being un p.c. and telling the truth. And yes, Jews were the 1st grocers to do this as typically a Jewish neighborhood (Chicago's West side and South Side) would be the 1st to 'turn black', but the grocers stayed. They then sold to Asians (typically Koreans), and now 'Arabs' own the stores (or vise versa in some areas).
Now this wasn't some organized conspiracy but it WAS a pattern. And yes Wal-Mart does sell food cheaper - duh! I'm sorry the Koreans had their feelings hurt but too bucking fad - it happened and STILL happens in Black neighborhoods.
(Hades must have frozen over, I'm sticking up for Andy Young.)
Korean Power. Love it.
He should be forced to account for his own racism. He has made a career out of accusing others of it.
Vietnamese refugees who came here with an ICRC i.d. card, and maybe $500, and little else, 25 years ago, are now largely doctors, lawyers, real estate agents, donut shop chain owners, professors, business people--if not their children and grand children. It puts to rest the yelling from one victimized, lazy segment of the our society that America is somehow inherently rigged against the 'poor' and 'disadvantaged'.
The hard work and RESULTS of some immigrants and minorities are an inconvenient EMBARRASMENT to some other immigrants and minorities in this country.
Google Search:
"Andrew Young" "racial slur" = 607 hits
"Joe Biden" "racial slur" = 823 hits
"George Allen" "racial slur" = 90,300 hits
Funny. I thought wow that can't be right. lol. So I took the trust but verify approach and did a search on George Allen myself and found that it is now 128,000. Can you believe that? I am shocked!!!!! I guess that will teach me for not accepting the word from a FREEPER from now on right away.
This suit will go nowhere. Democrats can't be touched--it must say so in the rules.
"Hillary Clinton" "Racial Slur" = 22,000 hits--better than Young of Biden, but still way behind Allen.
Wal-Mart isn't to blame. Andy Young is.
By suing Wal-Mart, they are perpetuating the same kind of mentality Young is.

Even the Governor of California, Gov. ARNOLD, honors the Freedom-loving example set by the Golden State's sterling Vietnamese-American Community:

Still, the day of the mini-mart as a primary source for food is over half a century in the past.
Not that all of them are doing well, but people we know still love OK City.
No thank you. I'd rather rob, cheat and steal. It's quicker. Failing that, I'll just try to win the lottery. ;-)
Whoops! I slipped and fell on the floor of Trump Towers! Whiplash!
