THE NATIONAL WEATHER SERVICE IN MOUNT HOLLY NJ HAS ISSUED A
* TORNADO WARNING FOR... CENTRAL NEW CASTLE COUNTY IN NORTHERN DELAWARE THIS INCLUDES THE CITY OF WILMINGTON
* UNTIL 430 PM EDT
* AT 359 PM EDT...NATIONAL WEATHER SERVICE DOPPLER RADAR INDICATED A SEVERE THUNDERSTORM CAPABLE OF PRODUCING A TORNADO NEAR ELSMERE... OR ABOUT 8 MILES WEST OF WILMINGTON...MOVING EAST AT 20 MPH.
* THE TORNADO IS WILL BE NEAR... ELSMERE BY 410 PM EDT... WILMINGTON BY 420 PM EDT... BELLEFONTE BY 425 PM EDT...
THE SAFEST PLACE TO BE DURING A TORNADO IS IN A BASEMENT. GET UNDER A WORKBENCH OR OTHER PIECE OF STURDY FURNITURE. IF NO BASEMENT IS AVAILABLE...SEEK SHELTER ON THE LOWEST FLOOR OF THE BUILDING IN AN INTERIOR HALLWAY OR ROOM SUCH AS A CLOSET. USE BLANKETS OR PILLOWS TO COVER YOUR BODY AND ALWAYS STAY AWAY FROM WINDOWS.
IF IN MOBILE HOMES OR VEHICLES...EVACUATE THEM AND GET INSIDE A SUBSTANTIAL SHELTER. IF NO SHELTER IS AVAILABLE...LIE FLAT IN THE NEAREST DITCH OR OTHER LOW SPOT AND COVER YOUR HEAD WITH YOUR HANDS.
A TORNADO WATCH REMAINS IN EFFECT UNTIL 800 PM EDT TUESDAY EVENING FOR NORTHERN DELAWARE AND NORTHEASTERN MARYLAND AND SOUTHERN NEW JERSEY AND EASTERN PENNSYLVANIA.
This is odd. Does Delaware usually get tornados?

Anyone wish on or off this (normally) low level list about the DelMarVA (Delaware, Maryland, Virgina) Peninsula let me know on the thread or in FReepmail.
It's not very common in northern Delaware...but it does occassionally happen. It's more frequent, but still uncommon in southern part of the state.

A couple of watches every year. The Accuweather radial velocity radar from Sterling VA indicates red vs green rotation of 40 knots just east of New Castle. This one is for real.

The National Weather Service has issued a severe thunderstorm warning for northern New Castle County until 4:15 p.m., and there was an unconfirmed report of a tornado touching down near Del. 41/Pa. 41 at the state line.
New Castle County police reported damaged trailers in the area.
As of 4 p.m., severe thunderstorms capable of producing penny-size hail and damaging winds in excess of 60 miles per hour a few miles north of Newark and moving to the southeast at about 25 miles per hour.
The severe thunderstorm will be near Stanton at about 4 p.m. and then move through Elsmere, Talleyville and Newport, Wilmington and Bellefonte.
In addition to large hail and damaging winds severe lightning could occur.
Doppler radar is showing circulation of at least 2 possible tornados in northern NCCo....
North side of Wilmington seems to be where the worst storms are right at the moment.

When a Tornado Warning is issued based on Doppler radar... it means that strong rotation has been detected in the storm. A tornado may already be on the ground... or is expected to develop shortly. If you are in the path of this dangerous storm... move indoors and to the lowest level of the building. Stay away from windows. If driving... do not seek shelter under a Highway overpass.
