The Philippine National Police on Tuesday said the alleged plot to sow terror in Metro Manila similar to the September 11 bombings in the United States has been thwarted with the arrest of three suspects over the weekend.
"Alam naman nating lahat na ang target talaga is Metro Manila so nagpakalat na kami ng information. (An all-out information campaign was conducted because we all know that Metro Manila is a prime target)," PNP chief Director General Oscar Calderon told a DZMM interview.
Police and military agents nabbed Razak Macarimbang, Wahad Sandigan and Sammy Gampong before boarding a SuperFerry vessel bound for Manila on Sunday. Authorities seized two improvised bombs from the suspects at Polloc port in Maguindanao.
Police linked the suspects to the Moro Islamic Liberation Front. Calderon, however, said that MILF spokesman Eid Kabalu has denied that the suspects belong to the group.
Calderon said Macarimbang, Sandigan and Gampong are now detained at a military camp in Cotabato.
Reports over the weekend said two bombers have slipped past security and are planning to attack for the 9/11 anniversary.
The National Capital Region Police Office had initially denied receiving intelligence reports about the supposed bombing plot.
Reynaldo Varilla, NCRPO chief, however, said that policemen will remain on alert.
I didn't know we had bombings here Sept. 11. I guess I was preoccupied by the attacks using hijacked passenger jets.
There was a much larger plot linked to the Phillipines and Muslim extremists in the 1990s. I think the plot involved several airliners and was code named "Bojinka." That plot barely rates any attention, even though the methods and miscreants were similar to those of 9/11.

Ringleader Ramsi Yousef was caught, though jailed for the 1993 WTC bombing and is staring at cement walls in the Florence Supermax prison in Colorado. Forever.
His uncle Khalid Sheikh Mohammed who was also involved in Bojinka was also a planner of the 9/11 WTC attack and is in Gitmo or some other facility (once rumored to be a military airbase in Thailand where he was being "tortured" by air con that was turned down too low).
