(Utah) Republican Party Launches Ad Campaign Against Rocky Anderson (Calls Sheehan Anti-American)

Republican Party Ad: "Now Rocky Anderson has invited her to Utah. Does he really share her anti-American beliefs?"

The debate over the Iraq War debate heats up with the state Republican Party blasting Salt Lake's mayor and prominent war protester Cindy Sheehan. The debate over public protests against the Iraq War is escalating today.

Two days away from a visit by the President, the GOP is taking aim, essentially raising the question: Are anti-war protesters anti-American? The new ad is running on 20 Utah radio stations. It equates Mayor Anderson and protester Cindy Sheehan with a "cut-and-run strategy," and urges Utahns to call the Mayor's office to complain.

Salt Lake City government has hired three temporary workers and set-up a temporary center to deal with a deluge of calls to the Mayor's office.

Mayor Rocky Anderson plans to protest a visit by President Bush to the American Legion Convention in Utah this week and he's invited prominent anti-Iraq War protester Cindy Sheehan, who lost her son in Iraq, to attend.

Utah Republican Party Ad: "And the choice is clear. Do we do whatever it takes to win the war on terror? Or do we embolden the terrorists with a cut-and-run strategy? Mayor Rocky Anderson has made his decision. He's invited professional protester Cindy Sheehan to Utah to convince you that America must retreat...Now Rocky Anderson has invited her to Utah. Does he really share her anti-American beliefs?"

Jeff Hartley, Executive Director, Utah Republican Party: (Q: In a way, you're calling Rocky anti-American?) "Well, we're asking if he is. He's bringing someone to Utah who has made blatantly anti-American statements. In bringing her here, he either supports her values or he's using her as a prop to draw national attention to himself."

Mayor Rocky Anderson: "I think it's disgraceful. WE had a great republican President in Theodore Roosevelt. And he said, and I absolutely agree with him, that it's so important to hold a president accountable. And if a president has taken this country in the wrong direction, we need to stand up against that president."

As of 5:00 today, 183 people called the Mayor's office, most to complain. The Utah Republican Party would not tell us how much they're spending on the new ad, but I checked with KSL Radio and they say Republicans are spending more than $7000 for 21 spots which will be running today and tomorrow.

Text of Utah GOP radio ad:

"America is at war against an enemy determined to strike us at home. Just days ago terrorists were caught planning to blow up flights to America. The threat to our country is real. And the choice is clear.

"Do we do whatever it takes to win the war on terror? Or do we embolden the terrorists with a cut-and-run strategy? Mayor Rocky Anderson has made his decision. He's invited professional protester Cindy Sheehan to Utah to convince you that America should retreat.

"Cindy Sheehan called Al-Qaeda in Iraq 'freedom fighters.' And she called America 'the largest terrorist organization in the world.' Said she'd rather live under dictator Hugo Chavez [Venezuela's president] than President Bush.

"Now Rocky Anderson has invited her to Utah. Does he really share her anti-American beliefs?

"President Bush is visiting Utah to pay his respects to our nation's veterans.

"Call Rocky and tell him to stop embarrassing Utah: 801-535-7704.

    That's 535-7704.

"Paid for by the Utah Republican Party."

My Mother's letter to the editor of the Provo Daily Herald;

Since Rocky Anderson isn't running for another term as mayor, I believe I must give him the following big thank you.

Thank you, Rocky, for making i-15 the longest, car-jammed parking spot in the state, and there is no place to go when there's an accident that shuts down the freeway.

Thank you, mayor, for all the pollution being spewed out into the air from thousands of parked, idling cares.

Thank you, Rocky, for costing the residents of Utah, and the Utah Department of Transportation, millions of dollars for the many months of work stoppage on Legacy Highway.

Kudos to you, Mr. Anderson, for making all this happen. Now that you will soon be unemployed, possibly you could run for county commissioner in Davis County. I'm sure they are fond of you.

Oh, and now, thank you for bringing Cindy Sheehan to our state. We all need the wisdom she brings.

My mom has never written a letter to the editor in her 70+ years. But Anderson really p*ssed her off. Inviting the perpetual mourning mother to the state was the last straw. Rocky is not well-loved outside of SLC.

Huh? "Raising the question"? Sounds to me like the ad was ANSWERING the question. (IOW: "No, Cindy, we aren't questioning your patriotism. We have no question about where your allegiance lies.")

Thanks for the post and the ping.

Mayor Anderson is either anti-American or has a box of rocks for brains, probably both.

"We had a great republican President in Theodore Roosevelt."

I don't even know where to start with this.

Yep. If Teddy was around today, he'd have the likes of Cindy Sheehan put in jail or in a mental hospital, he'd turn the Sunni Triangle into a giant box of kitty litter and he'd appeal directly to the public to kill-off the terrorist-supporting mainstream media by turning them off and boycotting any advertisers they had left. He'd also tell the state legislatures to grow some 'nads and start purging their ranks of anti-American professors because he wouldn't put up with terrorist-enablers living off the taxpayer's dime and calling it education.

Oh yes, one last thing. He would remind the open borders lobby that slavery was abolished forever after the Civil War. That abolition included third worlders who could live better as slaves for rich Americans than remaining in their messed-up homelands. People who wanted to come here to become Americans would be welcome under reasonable circumstances, but those who wanted to come here as reconquistadoras or to suckle off the teat of American taxpayers would be turned away and shot if they tried sneaking in again.

Are anti-war protesters anti-American?

When they hug and go arm in arm with anti-American dictators - yes, they are!

Saw a newspaper headline (not sure if it was the Trib or the Deseret news that said something about Dissent helping our enemies...made me feel good that someone would say that, even if they disagreed in the article (didn't read it, just saw the papers in passing at the grocery store.)

Cindy stood and mugged a smile while Hugo yelled: “Down with the U.S. empire! It must be said, in the entire world: Down with the empire!”
