Seemingly before the wind stopped, certainly before power was restored, they began arriving.
The initial wave brought the food, the drink, the clothing, the gasoline to get through those first desperate, chaotic days.
The second wave brought hammers, saws, shovels, drills, all the tools necessary to begin removing Hurricane Katrinas afterbirth.
As summer turned to fall and fall to winter, they came, wave after wave after wave. From near and far, points domestic and international, some 350,000 volunteers set aside their lives to help us rebuild ours.
And still they come. To paraphrase volunteer Elizabeth Ryan, they climb, pound, beat, lift, drag, haul, scrub, sweep, crouch, sweat, tear and chop, fall into bed exhausted and rise to do it again.
Read her account and meet all her cohorts in The Volunteers, a special Katrina commemorative section inside today.
WOW!!! THANKS from People that were helped!! DOUBLE WOW!!!
BTT. It may come as a shock to the mainstream media, but places other than New Orleans were devastated by the storm. If it can't be used against Bush it just isn't news.
And I say thankyou 350,000 times to all of y'all that gave your sweat , money, and tears to help us down here in Mississippi.
Everyday I see the worst of humanity in the news, for the last year,we have seen the best of humanity FROM ALL THOSE THAT CAME HERE.
Thanks Y'all!!

Takin' Care of Dixie ping
Ping, yall.
God bless you all. You really make me proud, and I suspect a large percentage of Americans as well. We don't prosper on negative stories, but we sure do admire can do folks, the kind who built this great country, and the same ones who keep it going, no matter the difficulty. Forget the losers who cry for a fork in the mouth three times a day. We are a generous country, but we should forget the generosity after all credibility has been exhausted and just back the winners.
Dang, beat me by less than a minute. Well, this one deserves a double ping.
We saw the Discovery Channel special "Surviving Katrina" last night. The show didn't mention South Mississippi ONCE! It was ALL about New Orleans!
Nearly all the devestation photos were of Mississippi ... not New Orleans. Surprising the MSM would do that, huh? lol
The way I look at it now is that, the more the media does not focus on us, WE ARE DOING SOMETHING RIGHT.
And the media will never focus in the long run, on good news.
G-d Bless
Jeff
How nice. I'm overwhelmed.
Hi NerdDad...good news travels fast!
I would like to add my thanks as well.
This is my first post here. I've been lurking and reading a lot.
I live where Katrina hit, the MS Gulf Coast. I only got about a foot and half of water in my house so I made out much better than most.
Please consider the Salvation Army for future donations.
They and the Faith Based charities were here first. My first hot meal after Katrina was given to me by the Salvation Army from one of their trucks. I was so thankful for it I almost cried.
We in Mississippi are very thankful for all and any help.
God Bless all of you.
Why it is is because Mississippi is governed by the GOP. They got right to rebuilding, and set their priorities so that the economy would come back first.
Mississippi didn't sit around whining for handouts. They went to work.
You might be surprised at how many people think that Mississippi didn't have much storm damage.
Not really, I still get emails such as "Is Gulfport and Biloxi back to normal yet."
This is something else that really used to make me angry, but these people have no point of reference. They can't imagine such a disaster, they have nothing to compare it to. On the other hand when I see people with an out of state tag, and speak with them, I ask "Was it as bad to see this in person or on the t.v."? The response always is "Their is no comparison from the t.v. coverage, from seeing this in person."
I just thank G-d for everyone that came down, and are still here helping us out.
