Allen Park Officer Hit In Crash Caused By Text-Messaging Driver
POSTED: 9:57 am EDT August 28, 2006
A suburban Detroit police officer was injured in an accident caused by a teenage motorist sending a text message on his cell phone.
Michigan State Police said a 17-year-old male driver hit the rear of an Allen Park police car, which was policing an earlier crash Sunday afternoon.
The crash caused the police car to spin around and hit the officer, who was thrown into the air on an Interstate 94 ramp.
The teenage driver, who told police he was text-messaging on his cell phone when he hit the police car, suffered minor injuries. He was treated and released from Oakwood Hospital in Dearborn.
The officer, who was listed in stable condition, was being treated at Detroit Receiving Hospital.

Into my coffee cup.
Stupid is as stupid does.
Seriously,....I don't even know how to send a text message.
Well, one thing you can say for the kid. He was honest.
If it were me I would have said that my foot slipped off the brake and hit the gas pedal.
And at my age, it would probably be true!
:)
LOL!
Hahahaha. I thought the same thing. NO WAY would I have admitted that's what I was doing.
A driver with a phone held to the side of his or her head isn't much safer. Especially when they still have to "type" to dial the phone.
WTF I JST HT A CP!! OMG LOL!!
Rush tells listeners when sees a woman farding while driving.
The teenager involved should receive the text message reading "you are stupid, and this is gonna cost you and your Mama and Daddy big time!!" Then signed "The Cop you hit!!"
"specially when they still have to "type" to dial the phone. "
Speed dial!
It's gotta be a kids thing because the buttons are so darn small. I have to use two hands just to type a number, one to hold the phone, and the other's index finger nail to push the numbers.
I got one better...... Driving on the freeway in town during Xmas rush. I look over to my left as a car passes and I see a women with scissors in one hand and tape in the other, WRAPPING XMAS PRESENTS!! All this while going 65-70mph.

And burned the rotweiller sitting in my lap.
Hey! You carrying that fake ID again?
No. There are bunch of people on this board who will tell us its their right to talk on the phone, and then that other distractions cause accidents as well.
I don't think they care whether anyone is hurt or not; their rights are more important.
But reading just one story about a family losing a loved one in a "driving while distracted" accident should be enough to keep us ALL from driving with anything that could take our attention away from our driving.

Thank You for your voice of reason. I might be addicted to this forum but, at least I'm not driving while posting!
I've been told the obsession with texting is something we Americans 'don't get'. Apparently texting is insanely popular in other English speaking countries such as NZ or Australia.
We have the right to drive eratic and weave about as we handle important business over our phones.
We can stay stopped at green lights or suddenly stop for no reason while driving because of what someone is telling us over our phone.
We are allowed to turn without using our turn signals and while having one arm up to our ear so we can hear the phone conversation over the stereo.
This is our right! Damn you for telling us what to do.
Honk Honk!
And if you are a rich bitch who drives about Utica Square in Tulsa Oklahoma, you get to do double what you want to do!
