TS/Hurricane/TS Ernesto
NWS/NHC ^ | 28 August 2006 | NHC

Posted on 08/28/2006 7:27:21 AM PDT by NautiNurse

Florida Governor Jeb Bush ordered a state of emergency in advance of Ernesto's anticipated Florida landfall as a hurricane. During his press briefing, Governor Bush emphasized the need to, "Have your family plan in place. Be prepared to be on your own for 72 hours. I know it sounds like a broken record." Jeb then repeated his message in Spanish.

All of the South Florida peninsula and Keys are under a hurricane watch, and portions of the watch areas may be upgraded to hurricane warnings later today.

NASA is moving Space Shuttle Atlantis from the launch pad back to its protective hangar, with the launch postponed until at least Sept. 7-8.

Hurricane Ernesto was downgraded to Tropical Storm status after battering Haiti and the Dominican Republic all day Sunday. The death toll in Haiti from Ernesto currently stands at 1 person; storm reports from Hispaniola are scarce this morning.

Ernesto has approached the eastern portion of Cuba, where the government issued a hurricane warning for six provinces, tourists were evacuated, and baseball games were played earlier Sunday than originally scheduled.

Just spent two hours on the meteorologists thread and those guys, who are all weather dudes, argue more than we do! The two best scenarios I came away with were that Ernie will hit N.Miami Bch. with 70 mph winds or 10-miles north and east of Plantation Key with 70 mph winds(10 miles north of my house.
So the heck with all of them I am going to my daughters in Key West tomorrow.

Frankly, I like the GFDL prediction! It would bring my neck of the woods some much needed rain. (SW Virginia)

I've studied it for two days and gotten opinions from over 100 of the top weather guys and I still don't have a clue. Maybe Key Largo, it keeps coming up. Key Largo at 70-80 mph.
But NC could get hit hard, it could be a 2 by labor day and wind up stalling, bad news for all my friends up there.

Now the strength is something I'm not sure about [when those suckers come out over hot water...they can zap upward fast...others are saying he's been beat up so much he doesn't have time to reorganize that much...I don't know].

What I do hope and pray it stays small and gives those that need rain...rain.

I'm all for group hugs, but keep the TS rains out of Northern VA please. One flood per year is my stated limit.

I hope this thing doesn't pull a Hugo.

Hugo was already a low-end Cat 3 when it hit the Gulf Stream - went from 115 mph to 135 mph and a Cat 4.
