STATEMENT OF CLARIFICATION

TAMPA--In a recent article published in the Florida Baptist Witness, Congresswoman Katherine Harris was asked to comment on the interplay of faith and politics in the public square. In the interview, Harris was speaking to a Christian audience, addressing a common misperception that people of faith should not be actively involved in government. Addressing this Christian publication, Harris provided a statement that explains her deep grounding in Judeo-Christian values.

Bryan Rudnick, Harris for Senate Campaign Manager stated, "I joined this campaign because Congresswoman Harris is a passionate supporter of Israel, the Jewish people and always has the best interests of all Floridians at heart. As the grandson of Holocaust survivors, I know that she encourages people of all faiths to engage in government so that our country can continue to thrive on the principles set forth by our Founding Fathers, without malice towards anyone."

In Congress, Katherine Harris has consistently supported pro-Israel legislation. Representative Harris co-sponsored numerous resolutions including: H. Con. Res. 248, to honor the life and work of Simon Wiesenthal and to reaffirm Congress' commitment to the fight against anti-Semitism and all forms of intolerance; H.Con.Res. 392, to recognize the 58th anniversary of the independence of the State of Israel; H.Con.Res. 101, to push for the European Union to add Hezbollah to its list of terrorist organizations; and H.Res. 575, to stress that Hamas and other terrorist organizations should not take part in elections held by the Palestinian Authority.

As a Florida State Senator, Katherine Harris co-sponsored S. 3062, the Holocaust and Yom Hashoah Victims Resolution, encouraging observation of the day to remember the horrific tragedy of the Holocaust. While serving as Secretary of State, Congresswoman Harris advocated for funding for the Florida - Israel Linkage Institute to promote business/ cultural/educational/technological exchanges, and she traveled to Israel for personal and professional purposes. As Harris frequently reminds voters in her campaign speeches for the U.S. Senate, she is committed to standing by Israel.

She was speaking to the Baptists who understood ....they believe that abortion & homosexual marriage are sins.

Abortion to them is a sin that has been legislated!

The homosexual lobby is trying to get same sex marriage approved by legistatures...

She adressed the Jewish issue because the Miami Herald article had quoted a Jewish Representative.

Well, at least she admits her error and is making an attempt to retract the statement.

The path to elective loss and post-political obscurity is paved with retracted statements. Mrs. Harris is well along her way there.

No she was saying that only Christians should be elected. She knew what she was saying. She has been in politics long enough to know that whatever you say no matter what group it is meant for everyone will read it or hear it.

She said only Christians should be elected and anyone else who gets elected is going to legislate sin. That is what she said. It does not matter what group she was talking to when everyone has access to read it. She also said that we are not a country of secular laws and that God chooses our elected officials.

Have you read any of LeRoy Collins interview with the FL Baptists?

He's dancing all around the issue of civil rights protections on the basis of sexual preference. In the first statement he says that he supports it....

Then in the second question he's for a definition of marriage amendment written by 'constitutional scholars'.

And then finally in the third answer he admits.... that he's totally uninformed that there is a petition for a Florida Marriage Protection Amendment.....

Holy Crap!

And some think that Collins is a viable candidate?

Do you support civil rights protections on the basis of sexual preference?

I support civil rights of all throughout the whole spectrum of humanity and I think that it has nothing to do with sexual preference as far as I’m concerned. Are you talking about gay marriage or something like that? Yes, I do.

Do you support a federal constitutional amendment to define marriage as being only between one man and one woman? Why or why not?

I support that as a statute and if I was there and it was put forth as a constitutional amendment, I would support that. I probably wouldn’t originate that simply because the Constitution is something we amend very, very rarely. I would support that but not being a lawyer, I realize the Constitution is quite sacrosanct. So I would probably support it but I wouldn’t originate it because I wouldn’t feel qualified to defend it as an amendment. I think that would require a constitutional lawyer to do that and there are lots of those up there and I’m not one of them.

Do you support the Florida Marriage Protection Amendment?

I am not familiar with that. So, I don’t feel qualified to pass judgment on that and I have been concentrating more on federal issues. I just don’t feel qualified to comment on it.

Actually, I only attack foolish actions, blundering, etc. Unfortunately I seem to have new material on a daily basis. Perhaps that's why it seems that I do nothing but attack her.

No, it won't. However, after she gets smacked in the general I may not be able to resist the urge to mention that perhaps she wasn't the right candidate.

I assume you do not understand Christians...I thought that I had seen it all till I saw this thread...I have ever seen so much Christian bashing as here....I think maybe that I took the wrong turn and turned up on DU...Since when is professing your own faith all that bad...I am proud of the fact that She is a Christian and she practices her faith...Along with the fact she is the only conservative in this race it makes it even better for me.....Because she profess her own faith does not mean she does not respect others beliefs....Nor does she have to mention all of them to make that so...I hear this argument all the time from my liberal friends....Christians stay in your corner and keep your mouth shut....You do not want to offend someone....Well this Christian has stood up for others beliefs and will stick up for her rights....I know one thing that after the primary's are over we will see which anti Harris individuals we have left....I am really starting to believe that we have a few ringers in this group of Harris bashers.....I feel a few of you mean well but it does not help those of us who support her..I do not see those of us who support her bashing any other state candidates...I truly believe that a few of you here in other states have your own problems to deal with....

She may be the "only" conservative in the race, but this comes down to your personal strategy. Do you take a 70% conservative who can win the election over a 90% conservative who is behind 30 points in the polls? That's on you. I'd personally rather win the seat and get a 90% LIBERAL out of power. As for her comments about faith, she may not disrespect other faiths, but her comments say otherwise. Her campaign didn't need any more BS and but that's exactly what she brought onto them AGAIN.

I used to support her. You can check out the comments as late as this past March. But reality is starting to make me think she isn't nearly the politician she is made to be, she's run a horrible campaign and she's becoming a joke.

I do not see those of us who support her bashing any other state candidates...I truly believe that a few of you here in other states have your own problems to deal with....

If you don't want comments from out of state, don't post the threads were people from out of state can see them. There is NO prohibition on FR about people from "out of state" commenting on problems in Florida or Ohio or Texas. On the contrary, comments from out of state is EXACTLY what some of us need from time to time.

I haven't quite figured this out yet. Sure she's a fallable human being, so why defend each and every mistake she makes like it's a conspiracy or something?

You married one Mike...I have been a Christian for along time....Not always a very good one at times...I cannot see what all the furor is over her speaking to this Christian group....You do not support her now....That is ok too....I have supported her for along time through two other elections and now this one...She has been one of the best friends that a Vet could have...Either active or retired or just a vet.....I think that I read that you were in the service also...I salute that if it is true....Having seen how messed up the VA is at time and how she has helped several friends of mine...I will stick with her just like she has stuck with my vet friends....She has stuck to her conservative principles from day one...That is why she is having the problems with the RNC now....That is a fact that some here just seem to want to gloss over or not believe...I just do not understand why so many out of stater's come here to bash her that absolutely have no vote in this election...We are trying down here to win a race...I imagine the anti's love these threads...By the way I want eyes tired after reading my post...That way I know they are reading them....I support Blackwell in Ohio and hope he wins...I also know that the liberal media up there gives him just as hard a time as Katherine gets here....I would think that just maybe you and others might want to give us supporters of Katherine some help not this....You can state your opinions all you want here...That is your right....Just maybe it might help if it was in a more positive light...

Collins is a lightweight. He'll never make it to first base. In fact, he reminds me of Bill Nelson, who needs to be sent back to the orange grove. Nelson represents the liberal lunatics in places like Boston and NYC; he doesn't represent Florida.

Please take a look at #207 about LeRoy Collins, one of the other GOP primary candidates who also gave an interview to the Baptisits.

Some FL Freepers support him but he's a RINO.

Another one Will McBride, an immigration attorney, has marched under the Mexican flag with an 'Immigrants United for Freedom" sign. That group that has coordinated with A.N.S.W.E.R. & CODE PINK in anti-war & anti-Israel rallies.

Katherine Harris represents our conservative values best....and that's why she has our support.
