It's Gingrich's to Lose (Zogby '08 White House Poll Shows Tancredo 4th)

Washington Whispers

It's Gingrich's to Lose in 2008

Sorry, Hillary. And Big John, you might have missed your chance in 2000.

That's because a new and innovative poll from John Zogby about 2008 presidential candidates finds former Republican Speaker Newt Gingrich way out front of fellow GOP-ers like Sen. John McCain and also finds moderates like former Virginia Gov. Mark Warner far ahead of libs like Sen. Hillary Rodham Clinton.

Here's the unusual thing about the Zogby poll released to Whispers: When questioning likely primary voters, only brief biographies and not names were given.

In other words, voters picked the one with the best experience. Without her name recognition working for her, Clinton came in a miserable sixth out of 10.

"It looks like the Democrats want to grab the middle," says Zogby, who says outside-the-beltway Democrats lean moderate.

Surprises on the GOP side: Harsh immigration critic Rep. Tom Tancredo ranks fourth, showing the power of the anti-immigrant issue.

Is the poll important? Big time. In 1999, Zogby's "blind bios" poll identified "maverick" McCain as a very attractive candidate in primary states long before he almost knocked off George W. Bush.

The Democratic order and percentage: Warner, 14.8; retired Gen. Wesley Clark, 14.2; Wisconsin Sen. Russ Feingold, 12.2; Indiana Sen. Evan Bayh, 11.1; former Sen. John Edwards, 10.4; Clinton, 5.6; New Mexico Gov. Bill Richardson, 5.3; former Alaska Sen. Mike Gravel, 4.9; Massachusetts Sen. John Kerry, 4.9; Iowa Gov. Tom Vilsack, 3; Delaware Sen. Joe Biden, 2.8.

The GOP rankings: Gingrich, 21.4; McCain, 13.3; former New York Mayor Rudy Giuliani, 11.2; Tancredo, 9.9; Nebraska Sen. Chuck Hagel, 6.1; Arkansas Gov. Mike Huckabee, 5.8; Senate Majority Leader Bill Frist, 5.6; Virginia Sen. George Allen, 4.9; Kansas Sen. Sam Brownback,4.3; Massachusetts Gov. Mitt Romney, 3.8; New York Gov. George Pataki, 2.8.

Agreed. The alledged poll is laughable.

Ignoring the poll and speaking only of the "candidates" (has anyone declared himself yet?), there has been one interesting theme which echos throughout this thread:

Gingrich: Unelectable; too much personal baggage.
Tancredo: Unelectable; one-issue candiates don't become president
McCain: Unelectable; RINO
Giuliani: Unelectable; RINO
Huckabee: Unelectable; open borders advocate
Allen: ? Macaca?
Romney:?
Hagel, Frist, Brownback, and Pataki: Not yet mentioned in this thread.

So, if the theoretic leaders are unelectable for one reason or another, who's it going to be then? Is it even possible to find someone with the intelligence, vision, and will to keep our country safe and secure and profitable who doesn't have some kind of political liability?

Geez, no one's perfect.

I have no doubt that whoever the dhimm's put up, we'll be able to take them apart based on philosophy/ideas/political track record alone. There should be no need to even bring up their personal failings.

I don't think anybody needs to be downing Bob Dole. He served his country well, for decades. Was he the appropriate candidate to field in 96? History says no, but that is no reason to speak poorly of the man himself. Leave him be.

Gingrich is compromised. Ever since shaking Slick Willy's hand in front of those seasoned citizens back in the 90s, he was compromised.

In a different time, as a matter of fact in the time of Bob Doles yoot. Kerrrrry, Murtha and Hagel would have been pelted with tomatoes at any appearance, or tarred and feathered for their treasonous assaults.

What?! The family values crowd is what gets Republicans elected. Do you believe for a minute that if Focus on the Family and the Family Research Council pulled their support any Republican could win? That's exactly what would happen if Giuliani became the nominee. Family values are not confined to "the occasional moonbat." They are the driving force behind conservatism today.

I agree. I wish Kerry, Murtha and Hagel would be held more accountable for their actions and words. That is why we have elections, so hopefully they will have to pay the toll keeper more than they expect.

In other news, Zogby special polling style predicts that the NFL quarterback will marry Alice the Goon. By having those surveyed pick out a mate based on statements but no pictures, dates, or conversations....

Might sound good on paper, but reality virtually never works that way.

I'm speaking of the term itself, and only the term. Conservative don't use it to describe what they believe in. Liberals do.

I was being sarcastic. I am very much part of the "family values crowd," and there is a large group here on FReeRepublic which considers our crowd more dangerous and evil than outright communists. (Didn't take long, in fact, before one of them responded to me on this very thread.)

"Zogby just wants Gingrich to run, so he will be pounded by the media for being forced out as speaker and what he was being accused of at the time. It will make him look unelectable and the donks would win then. I like Newt but he is unelectable."

BINGO...By the time the media was finsished with him then we would have Hillary.

I would not vote for McCain to head a boy scout troup. Especially after his trick on illegal immigration. He is a Full top of the scale Rhino. Rudy is a nice guy, but a bit of a Rhino.

I guess that leaves Rep Tancredo!

Huckabee does have a great diet plan.
. . . which puts me in mind of the prediction of the 1980 race,
"Ronald Reagan will be elected because he represents the highest aspirations of the American people.

Which is to look as he does when we are 69 years old!"

You mean voters read a brief bio of Hillary saying "former First Lady" and didn't know which candidate she/(he?) was?

"But if it came down to McCain vs a Dem, he would get my vote."

McCain is a Dem. Just because he wears sheeps clothing then don't let that fool you. He is as lefty as you can get. You could not trust him to in anything. Never forget how he pushed through that bill on illegal amnesty.

I understand. He is, for all intents and purposes, a Dem. But if he were to win the Repub nomination, he would get my vote because the Dem nominee would be even further left than McCain. I'm telling you, in all honesty, I don't believe he's strong enough, physically, to run and win the nomination. His team is doing a good job of covering for him. He seems in fragile health. I don't think that the higher-ups in the Repub party will let the enthusiasm for McCain get to the point of nomination in 2008.

Not sure how high I am on a Newt campaign but i'd vote for him in a heartbeat over McCain and Rudi.
