Washington Whispers
It's Gingrich's to Lose in 2008
Sorry, Hillary. And Big John, you might have missed your chance in 2000.
That's because a new and innovative poll from John Zogby about 2008 presidential candidates finds former Republican Speaker Newt Gingrich way out front of fellow GOP-ers like Sen. John McCain and also finds moderates like former Virginia Gov. Mark Warner far ahead of libs like Sen. Hillary Rodham Clinton.
Here's the unusual thing about the Zogby poll released to Whispers: When questioning likely primary voters, only brief biographies and not names were given.
In other words, voters picked the one with the best experience. Without her name recognition working for her, Clinton came in a miserable sixth out of 10.
"It looks like the Democrats want to grab the middle," says Zogby, who says outside-the-beltway Democrats lean moderate.
Surprises on the GOP side: Harsh immigration critic Rep. Tom Tancredo ranks fourth, showing the power of the anti-immigrant issue.
Is the poll important? Big time. In 1999, Zogby's "blind bios" poll identified "maverick" McCain as a very attractive candidate in primary states long before he almost knocked off George W. Bush.
The Democratic order and percentage: Warner, 14.8; retired Gen. Wesley Clark, 14.2; Wisconsin Sen. Russ Feingold, 12.2; Indiana Sen. Evan Bayh, 11.1; former Sen. John Edwards, 10.4; Clinton, 5.6; New Mexico Gov. Bill Richardson, 5.3; former Alaska Sen. Mike Gravel, 4.9; Massachusetts Sen. John Kerry, 4.9; Iowa Gov. Tom Vilsack, 3; Delaware Sen. Joe Biden, 2.8.
The GOP rankings: Gingrich, 21.4; McCain, 13.3; former New York Mayor Rudy Giuliani, 11.2; Tancredo, 9.9; Nebraska Sen. Chuck Hagel, 6.1; Arkansas Gov. Mike Huckabee, 5.8; Senate Majority Leader Bill Frist, 5.6; Virginia Sen. George Allen, 4.9; Kansas Sen. Sam Brownback,4.3; Massachusetts Gov. Mitt Romney, 3.8; New York Gov. George Pataki, 2.8.

Clinton had the full power of the MSM to assist him. Newt will have the full power of the MSM pulling on him like an anchor. One helps, one hurts.
Which would be fine if he confined his controlling impulses to his own temple: Former smoking fatty control freak falls for second-hand smoke scam and tries to tell everybody else how to live
But hey, the guy can play that guitar and that's worth a vote. Get real...
"McLame or Rudy could win the general. (against Hills and without Bloomie running as an 'I')"
I agree on Rudy, but not on McLame. And the idea of Bloomie as an "I" is a joke. OPutside of New York, NOBODY knows or cares about this guy!
"In other words, voters picked the one with the best experience. Without her name recognition working for her, Clinton came in a miserable sixth out of 10."
this ignores important reality - that name-recognition IS important. Without it GWBush would never have become president.
You got that right. When Gingrich went to Congress, people I know in GA didn't vote for him because of the way he treated his first wife. Then, after several years as US Rep. he more or less did the same thing by getting involved with one of his staff and dumping wife #2. He also declared his admiration for Clinton's charisma and more or less said he had a difficulr time withstanding Clinton when he turned on the charm.
I would never vote for Newt for Pres.--very intelligent, but lacking in integrity and stability.
vaudine
That is why the President has been maneuvering Hillary into a position of respectability, with his personal comments, and appearances. Even with the cozying up his father is doing. It is a shell game, with no pea. The Republican party now has its version of the Libs race card. Don't vote for them, they are evil and will take your freedom away. Gone forever are the days of positive politics, they have been swept away in the rush of personal attacks.
Come on people. You know who the best candidates are. They are the ones NOBODY IS TALKING ABOUT. Rick Santorum and Mike Pence are probably the nation's strongest conservatives and they can articulate our values. Pence is a socon who can easily win the libertarian vote and Ricky is a major socon who can win the moderate vote (he's been doing in PA with some success). If he can pull off the election this fall...watch out. Romney and Huckaby seem to be the most best candidates so far, but can they win? Please, oh please, all you Guilianibots and McLame lovers...stop. Now. They are so smokin' left. They're both good guys but aweful republicans.
The fact that Tancredo is even mentioned on this poll snds chills down my back!
"interactive poll" = "non-scientific" = "total BS"
Oops. I read the question wrong!! I'm sorry. I would never vote for Hillary!! I looked at it and saw McCain first. I have seen McCain in person and I think that he is too fragile to be President. But if it came down to McCain vs a Dem, he would get my vote.
I haven't heard the phrase uttered by a conservative since Dan Quayle, back when Murphy Brown was still a first-run show.
I do see it from time to time on the occasional moonbat's bumper, though.
How does a guy that hails from the NE, born with a silver spoon in his mouth, talk like he is from Texas? I would say careful coaching, and grooming for his current job.
The dims would love to see Gingrich the candidate.
Clinton had an opponent that was something like 100 years old, a veteran compromiser and empty suit. It was Doles chance to be the nominee, after years of service.
:)
A veteran of the military that sacrificed so we can post here and it cost him allot physically, yet he never ran off at the mouth trying to use his military experience as a prop like Kerry, Murtha, Hagel, etc.
