CA: GOP seems ready to be fooled twice - Schwarzenegger hasn't earned loyalty of conservatives
The Orange County Register ^ | August 27, 2006 | STEVEN GREENHUT

Posted on 08/27/2006 7:34:46 AM PDT by calcowgirl

Those who believe in nothing will fall for anything, as the old saying goes. So it's only fitting that a Republican Party that has ceased to believe in anything has fallen for Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger.

Maybe in the early days of his administration, and through the defeat of his reform agenda last November, it was defensible to support him. But no more. Yet many Republican leaders at the state GOP convention in Century City were still atwitter over the Terminator's tired clichés and faux tough talk.

--snip

At Century City, Schwarzenegger blasted the Democrats: "Our friends in the other campaign want to go back to the failed policies of the past – higher taxes, more government spending, more government regulations and less growth."

Compare what the other party does with Schwarzenegger's program of higher debt spending, more government spending and more government regulations and less growth, and it's quite a choice, isn't it?

Of course, the Democrats are always bad. So, of course Republicans will usually rally around their candidate, no matter how far afield his viewpoints might be. But a point is reached where it's not worth it anymore, where victory isn't so sweet because "our" guy isn't in any fundamental way different from "their" guy.

--snip

At the Republican convention, Schwarzenegger refused to be seen with the Republican slate of down-ticket candidates. Tom McClintock, one of the most principled men in modern political life, is running for lieutenant governor against John Garamendi, who during an Editorial Board meeting a couple years ago actually sung the praises of the Cuban health care system! ... The governor is too good to stand with McClintock and Poochigian or some of the other perfectly well-qualified GOP candidates for statewide office? Then Republicans should be too good to stand with him.

If you eliminate the votes out of fear and star struck emotion Arnie would have run dead last in the Recall.

I tried to warn people what a pussy whipped AH he was but everyone was too enamored with his crappy movies and scared of Davis.

Looking backwards Davis couldn't have done as much damage.

To not vote for Arnold is to vote a Gray Davis-clone back into office. For what? To "show'em." To "show'em" what, how pure your principles are when Angelides is raising your taxes and pandering to the gender-benders, lezzies, and fudge-packers?

Yeah, that's Arnold's job.

I don't care if Arnie is 180 degrees from Angelides. Given the state of CA politics at this time, even a few degrees to the right of Angelides is enough for me to hold my nose and vote for Conan the RINOtarian.

What are you all worked up about? I quoted a post by Jim Robinson which is good conservative thinking. I agree with him. What do you have a problem with?

Republicans are just as blinded toward incumbency as are Democrats. They are afraid of "change" even within the party.

"if we got a socialist loon in there then republicans would turn around and get a real conservative"

===

That is total delusion. We don't win by losing.

Don't forget that only 34% of the registered voters are Republican. Don't forget that we had conservative gubernatorial candidates twice, both times Gray Davis beat them. Don't forget that no Republican had won statewide office for some time. These "losing to win" strategy doesn't seem to be working, we just keep losing.

Arnold is our last chance to stop the Dems from permanently taking over CA.

ANd things that happen while we are losing:

"Davis also appointed 10 openly gay judges."

Did you know that?

Simon if i recall didn't run a very good campaign and he came pretty close to beating davis.

Simon ran a fine campaign, with one bad gaff at the end. What killed him was Davis spending $60 million to convince Californians that Bill was some kind of crook. The innuendo, falsehoods and outright lies worked -- barely.

Hey ya Grunt! How ya doing?
You're still playing defense for the FO account, I see.

Still nothing to offer other than personal insults?
Tell it to Greenhut. He must be another "agent provocateur", huh?
Apparently he also expects a Republican Governor to act like one!

>> Can the CAGOP leadership appreciate the dilemma they've created for themselves, at the top of the ticket, when they surrendered their principles and organization to the Wilsonegger Gang and its liberal, celebrity spokesman? Did the Wilsonegger Gang think that Republicans would follow quietly or did they just assume that their spokesman had such broad appeal that the conservative members of the CAGOP weren't needed anymore to win statewide election? Last but not least; to those who labor away in the trenches; to those dedicated souls who work the FairOpinion account <<

You continually refer to Schwartzekennedy as a Pete Wilson Republican. He is definitely not a Pete Wilson Republican. Pete Wilson was a sucky "moderate" who sided with Democrats fairly often on social issues but at least stood up for SOMETHING, like when he CONSISTANTLY stood his ground on prop. 187 and consistantly opposed affirmation action while in office, proving those positions were more than just campaign rhetoric. If anyone is from the Peter Wilson wing of the party, it's Congressman Bilbray.

Schwartzenkennedy doesn't stand for anything. He claimed he was for Prop. 187, then flip-flopped on it once he got into office. He said he wanted to "seal the borders" then immediately took it back. He championed vetoing the driver's licenes for illegal aliens, then said he would sign a "compromise" version (which is no different than how Gray Davis acted prior to the recall)

Schwartzekennedy is not a centrist-style moderate Republican, he's a political opportunist who supporters whatever will win over enough commie liberals to keep him in power.

The governor most comparable to Schwartzekennedy would be Earl Warren. Call him the Warrenegger.
