Up to a point, we may be forgiven if we do not grasp the evil around us. Winston Churchill couldn't either. First presented with the utter malice in his own era, he did not believe. He was presented (for example) with the instance of a Nazi who took one women's three children. Utterly distraught, she pleaded for their lives. The Nazi's response: "You may take back one. Choose." Frozen in agony, she did not choose. The three children were slaughtered. She went insane. Churchill's response: "We are in the presence of a crime without a name." Churchill had an advantage over us. He was already in the midst of prosecuting a massive war, with casualties in the thousands every week, when he learned of the systematic devaluation of humanity that we have come to call the Holocaust.

America is at a disadvantage because only a minority of the country (fortunately, that minority at least includes the President, though that could change in 2008) understand what it is the Islamonazis really want to do.
Only a minority understands the ultimate goal of the Islamonazis: convert or kill every non-Muslim on earth. That's 4.5 billion people. That's 750 holocausts.
lets face it, there are many we could lose and be the better for it
Taking a lesson from the worshipers of Baal in 12 century BC, the muslim psychos continue the practice of child sacrifice to further their cause. I say similar: the muzzies are even lower in their barbarism because they use child sacrifice to kill other children and innocent men and women. It is a compliment to them to call them animals.
I clicked the link, and thought the article was pretty good except for this:
"Americans are also at a disadvantage because we do not understand people who place religion at the center of their identity and existence. A once-a-week visit to church or synagogue (if that), and a general sense of belief, are inadequate to understand religious fanaticism as anything other than a mystery."
It looks as though he's saying that anyone who has a strong belief in God as the center of their life is a fanatic who will kill people. He is apparently equating being a strongly religious person with being an evil fanatic. As though a wishy-washy believer who keeps God in a little corner is the only proper religious believer.
I don't consider the Islamic Jihadis religious fanatics. They THINK they're religious. They don't really believe in God; if they did, they'd know that God isn't served by their evil, but greatly offended.
I believe the passage that you cite could have been stated in a much better way. But I can assure you that Rabbi Goldberg didn't intend to insult people whose faith is at the center of their lives. It is, in fact, at the center of his life. He is an orthodox Rabbi, and a wonderful writer and poet. I was lucky enough to study under him at Hebrew University some years ago.
Thank you very much for the personal testimony on his behalf! I had a feeling he didn't mean it the way it sounded... but I wanted to clarify my position, anyway.
Do you have any links to any of his other writings?
He is currently Executive Editor of the Intermountain Jewish News, in Colorado. www.ijn.com . You can find some of his columns in the archives there. Also, Jewish World Review used to publish him occassionally, but I haven't been following JWR lately.
Animals have seasons for being hunted. Muslims do not.
Take that however you please.
"How dreadful are the curses which Mohammedanism lays on its votaries! Besides the fanatical frenzy, which is as dangerous in a man as hydrophobia in a dog, there is this fearful fatalistic apathy. Improvident habits, slovenly systems of agriculture, sluggish methods of commerce, and insecurity of property exist wherever the followers of the Prophet rule or live. A degraded sensualism deprives this life of its grace and refinement; the next of its dignity and sanctity. The fact that in Mohammedan law every woman must belong to some man as his absolute property - either as a child, a wife, or a concubine - must delay the final extinction of slavery until the faith of Islam has ceased to be a great power among men."
"Individual Moslems may show splendid qualities. Thousands become the brave and loyal soldiers of the Queen: all know how to die. But the influence of the religion paralyses the social development of those who follow it. No stronger retrograde force exists in the world. Far from being moribund, Mohammedanism is a militant and proselytizing faith. It has already spread throughout Central Africa, raising fearless warriors at every step; and were it not that Christianity is sheltered in the strong arms of science - the science against which it had vainly struggled - the civilization of modern Europe might fall, as fell the civilization of ancient Rome."

Agreed. All religions are no more the same then all people the same. That is a ridiculous statement and observation of the complexity of the world is proof of God even to the mentally challenged.
Problem is that some people are easily manipulated by the pro-terrorist media. This is sad commentary on the weak-minded out there.
Right after my comment someone explained that he had student under the author, and the author does not think that.
