Flight Lands In Newark After Dynamite Found In Luggage
POSTED: 2:41 pm EDT August 25, 2006 UPDATED: 3:05 pm EDT August 25, 2006 HOUSTON -- A college student's checked luggage on a Continental Airlines flight to Houston from Argentina on Friday contained dynamite, and federal authorities are investigating why he had it and what he intended to do with it, an FBI spokeswoman said.
"Certainly we are doing a thorough investigation and trying to find out what this individual's intention was in trying to bring dynamite here," FBI spokeswoman Shauna Dunlap said Friday.
The dynamite was found during a luggage search in a federal inspection station at Bush Intercontinental Airport shortly after Continental Flight 52 landed about 6 a.m. Friday. Marlene McClinton, spokeswoman for the Houston Airport System, said a bomb-sniffing dog "had a hit" on explosive residue during a further search.
She said Customs and Border Patrol and the FBI shut down the customs area and began questioning the passenger who had the luggage. The identity and age of the passenger, a man, were not released.
Houston Fire Department Assistant Chief Omero Longoria said the man told fire officials that he works in mining and often handles explosives, so that would explain the residue. He said federal officials were investigating whether the man's explanation was true, and the fire department's role in the probe ended upon determining the man's bag did not contain a bomb.

News Flash, Dynamite is a Bomb in itslef. If heated to certain degrees or placed under certain stress levels it can and will explode.
But what the heck, Napolean Dynamite meant no harm.
Again, they dont have a clue, and write it off as a kids harmless no harm mistake.
>>The identity and age of the passenger, a man, were not released.<<
Why not?
Wait, it's illegal to carry dynamite on a plane? Wow, I always pack a couple of sticks in my carry-on. Duh!
Who knew?
To possibilities:
1. The student was either checking airline security, or
2. The student was coming up here to help a friend blow stumps in the South Forty.
Did they find dynamite or just the dog smelling a residue?
Who would be STUPID enough to put dynamite in their luggage in these hyper vigilante times.
I bet it was just as the young man said, residue due to his job working with explosives.
Even the terrorists are trying to be slick on how they sneak stuff aboard.
I watched some of the interview with the released hostage who worked at the Christian Science monitor and MAN the stuff she was saying about the pregnant woman bragging about becoming a suicide bomber in front of her kids.
What caught my attention is how taken back the reporter was by how these evil fanatics talk about jihad/suicide bombing like we would non chalantly discuss getting our hair done and picking up the dry cleaning.
No lighters or hair Gel, just dynomite.
Houston Fire Department Assistant Chief Omero Longoria said the man told fire officials that he works in mining and often handles explosives, so that would explain the residue.
Very confusing article.
Is this what happened?: Plane from Argentina lands in Houston, where the bag was checked. Passenger and bag stay in Houston, plane continues on to Newark? Or did they find the stuff in Houston, determine there was no threat, and then passenger and and bag continue on to Newark?
...the fire department's role in the probe ended upon determining the man's bag did not contain a bomb.
FNC just said they found the entire makings of a bomb in his luggage. How did that suitcase get on the plane in Argentina? This story is really confusing. I bet they frisked every gray haired grandparent getting on that plane and ran their luggage through the bomb machines.
Hmmmmmmm, this college student wouldn't be moooooooslim would they ???
"McClinton said the explosive was removed from the airport and the incident caused no airport disruptions."
Very unclear. My gradeschool kids would do a better job depicting the facts. It sounds like there was no "bomb/dynamite" and in fact there was only a hit on residue. Was the guy arrested? Doesn't sound like it.
"the man's bag did not contain a bomb."
At birth I opted for the non-exploding scrotum myself. It's the smartest move I've ever made, Beavis.
Yes, Fox News just said the college student had the total makings of a bomb on board, not just blasting caps.
I agree and that was my thoughts also. I have been around stone quarries and they blast frequently.
Without reading the whole article, I am not surprised anyone, including myself, would come to a knee-jerk conclusion.
